{"id":781083,"date":"2026-05-08T03:28:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T03:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/781083\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T03:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T03:28:13","slug":"canvas-lms-service-disruption-uic-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/781083\/","title":{"rendered":"Canvas LMS service disruption | UIC today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and staff,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Technology Solutions and university leadership are aware that\u00a0the\u00a0Canvas\u00a0learning management system\u00a0is currently\u00a0unavailable\u00a0due to a national security incident affecting\u00a0all customers of\u00a0Instructure, the parent company of Canvas.\u00a0No other university systems are\u00a0impacted\u00a0by this incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We are awaiting information from Instructure as to when\u00a0access to\u00a0Canvas\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0restored.\u00a0Until the vendor can solve this problem, course materials will be unavailable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Members of university leadership are discussing\u00a0next\u00a0steps, with sensitivity to the impacts on students and instructors during the final exam period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is happening?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0Instructure,\u00a0a\u00a0criminal threat actor obtained data associated with certain Canvas accounts, affecting multiple institutions nationwide.\u00a0This incident originates from\u00a0Instructure\u00a0and is not specific to UIC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instructure has taken measures to protect the platform and is working with a third-party forensics firm on further investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Technology Solutions is working\u00a0closely\u00a0with\u00a0Instructure\u00a0and will continue to evaluate the situation as more information becomes available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What data is involved?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instructure\u2019s preliminary findings stated that the information involved consists of certain user data \u2014 including names, email addresses, student ID numbers and messages among users. The company stated that it has found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information were involved. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instructure is still investigating and has not shared specific information with us regarding UIC data included in the breach. However,\u00a0<b>Canvas does not contain dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What do I need to do?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No proactive action is required from students, faculty or staff at this time. However, if you receive an email or any other communications purporting to be from Canvas or Instructure, we ask that you do not click on any links or respond to the email, and instead forward it to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uic.edu\/canvas-lms-service-disruption\/mailto:security@uic.edu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">security@uic.edu<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you notice\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0Canvas\u00a0system\u00a0becomes available, please do not log in or engage in the platform until you receive an official campus communication\u00a0stating\u00a0that the platform is safe to use.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Where can I\u00a0learn more?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Technology Solutions leadership is working to identify next steps related to course materials, final exam activities and grading processes.
