{"id":781198,"date":"2026-05-08T04:41:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T04:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/781198\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T04:41:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T04:41:33","slug":"phoenix-study-looks-at-future-of-the-controversial-reverse-lanes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/781198\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix study looks at future of the controversial reverse lanes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ksaz-melrose-district-reverse-lanes-050726.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-7d0efd03=\"\"\/> article    <\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><strong>PHOENIX<\/strong> &#8211; The City of Phoenix held a virtual meeting on the night of May 7 to discuss how transportation should evolve as the city&#8217;s midtown area continues to grow, and the discussion also involved the future of the controversial reverse lanes on 7th Street and 7th Avenue.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">The backstory:<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/streetssite\/mediaassets\/midtown-core-study\/MCTS-Map-Accessible_4.27.26.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a map<\/a> provided by the City of Phoenix, there are reverse lanes on 7th Street and 7th Avenue.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">City officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/administration\/departments\/streets\/initiatives\/projects-studies\/7th-street-7th-avenue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> the reverse traffic lanes &#8220;add capacity to a road and decrease congestion by borrowing capacity from the other (off-peak) direction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;Reverse lanes have been in place on 7th Avenue and 7th Street since 1979 and 1982, respectively. They were created to address traffic concerns as Phoenix was growing its downtown core,&#8221; read a portion of the city&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/streetssite\/documents\/reverse_lane_study_december_2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2021 city study<\/a> found that removing Phoenix\u2019s reverse lanes would sharply worsen traffic and delays \u2014 in some areas by more than 40% \u2014 and instead recommended keeping the lanes while upgrading safety features, signals and corridor infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">In May 2025, the Phoenix City Council unanimously approved yet another study of the reverse lanes \u2014 and overall traffic patterns in Midtown \u2014 after a petition pushed for their removal.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Business owners in the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitphoenix.com\/lgbtq\/melrose-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Melrose District<\/a>, which is situated along a stretch of 7th Avenue, say honking, screeching tires and crashes is the daily soundtrack in the area.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;All kinds of things, and people just want you to stay away from these streets, which means they&#8217;re not coming to the businesses that are here. 7th Avenue and 7th Street are highways,&#8221; said Mark Howard, who owns The Royale. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been around a long time. People don&#8217;t read signs. It ain&#8217;t going to make a difference. You&#8217;ve got to put other things in place, like medians and trees, visual things that will get the traffic slowed and removed. The reverse lights.
