There was a time in recent Red Wings history that while they weren\u2019t viewing it as Siberia, most high-end NHLers were looking upon Detroit<\/a> as a no fly zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore,\u201d insists Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. \u201cI didn\u2019t see that as an issue last year and I don\u2019t anticipate that as an issue this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, he\u2019ll admit it. There was a time when selling top NHL UFAs on Detroit was like trying to sell parkas to Hawaiians.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess early on when we we\u2019re a last-place team and we weren\u2019t really a candidate to make the playoffs,\u201d Yzerman admitted.<\/p>\n

A lot of us #LGRW<\/a> fans are hoping for a big move (trade or UFA signing) this offseason. Based on the past couple years, I just don\u2019t get the sense that Yzerman is going to get one done. I hope he proves me wrong but I\u2019m keeping expectations low.<\/p>\n

In those days, as beggars the Red Wings couldn\u2019t be choosers. Like most struggling teams, when the A listers said no thanks, they were seeking to fit square pegs into round holes. Attempts at turning Andrew Copp<\/a> and JT Compher<\/a> into No. 2 centers didn\u2019t work. Making Ben Chiarot<\/a> into a first-pairing defenseman was left wanting.<\/p>\n

Yzerman believes that he can sell a top UFA on what the Red Wings have to offer. Still, he figures it\u2019s ultimately all about what is it that the player wants.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all comes down to what they are they looking for?\u201d Yzerman said. \u201cWhat\u2019s important to them? Are they trying to win a Stanley Cup? Are they looking to put the most money in their pockets as they can? Do they want to play with their buddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Might Red Wings Yzerman Overpay A UFA?<\/p>\n

There are published reports that an NHL team is going to be offering Toronto Maple Leafs UFA Mitch Marner<\/a> a two-year pact with an AAV in the $12-13 million range.<\/p>\n

Could that team be the Red Wings? This is one approach Yzerman might take. Get an A lister to sign on the dotted line by offering them mega money and short term. In doing so, the player will be getting his payday. At the same time he won\u2019t be stuck with a long-term commitment if the Red Wings again come up short in their playoff bid.<\/p>\n

Considering the young players he\u2019s putting into place, Yzerman believes he\u2019s assembling the building blocks to convince a top player that Detroit is a team with a bright future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you look at the group of our team and it\u2019s for any particular player, it\u2019s an enticing opportunity to play alongside some of these guys and really make a difference on a team that\u2019s trying to take another step,\u201d Yzerman said.<\/p>\n
