(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945:<\/strong> \u201cComplete victory in Europe was won by the allies today with the unconditional surrender of Germany,\u201d read the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-v-e-day-today-chicag\/197088627\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-v-e-day-today-chicag\/171889007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">front page<\/a>\u00a0of the Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Victory in Europe (V-E) Day brought thousands of people to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-v-e-state-st-prays-and\/171888069\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-v-e-state-st-prays-and\/171888069\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">State Street<\/a>. The exterior lights of movie theater marquees, the Water Tower and Palmolive Building \u2014 dim since a Feb. 1 order \u2014 were once again lit in celebration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicagoans took to the streets for a V-E Day celebration on May 8, 1945. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> Tied at 3-3, a Chicago White Sox game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Comiskey Park was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sox-battle-brewers-end\/171895893\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended at 1 a.m.<\/a>, May 9, because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1984\/08\/18\/Tom-Seaver-Likes-ALs-Curfew-Rule\/6135461649600\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American League\u2019s curfew<\/a> and resumed the next day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/19\/a-man-of-few-words-white-sox-legend-harold-baines-let-his-bat-do-the-talking-all-the-way-to-the-hall-of-fame\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Baines<\/a> ended the game in the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-25-9-sox-sweep-chic\/171896364\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25th inning<\/a> when he hit a home run into the center field bullpen \u2014 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/discover\/inside-pitch\/baines-blast-ends-longest-game-in-AL-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">753rd pitch<\/a>, according to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Sox won 7-6. At <a href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/gamesproj\/game\/may-8-9-1984-the-longest-game-in-major-league-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eight hours and six minutes<\/a>, it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/longest-games-in-baseball-history-c275773542\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">longest game in elapsed time<\/a> in MLB history. (The longest game in innings \u2014 26 \u2014 between the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves took place May 1, 1920, in Boston. Tribune columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jerome-holtzman-hes-no\/171896813\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jerome Holtzman<\/a> noted both pitchers were not only born in Chicago, but also went the distance.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen years from now, millions of Chicagoans will have laid claim to being in Comiskey Park for this historic two-night affair,\u201d Tribune reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-a-fans-delight-longest\/171896579\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Mitchell<\/a> wrote. \u201cAccept no frauds.
