It is described as having a purplish-red hue with yellowish undertones, a high-quality color grade, moderate transparency and a highly reflective surface. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Myanmar produces as much as 90% of the world\u2019s rubies, primarily from the areas of Mogok and Mong Hsu. Gemstones, both legitimately traded and smuggled, are a major source of revenue for Myanmar. Human rights activists and organizations such as the Britain-based research and lobbying group <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-lifestyle-myanmar-army-aung-san-suu-kyi-af4133c6a01e461e5971c4444e2f2dd5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Global Witness have urged<\/a> jewelers to stop purchasing gems sourced from Myanmar, as the industry has served as a vital revenue stream for its military governments over several decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-min-aung-hlaing-cabinet-military-682ec3787ed50f7a07b5820e6ea7277a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new, ostensibly civilian government<\/a> was installed this year, but it followed <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-election-military-hlaing-suu-kyi-fae9efc8021c651ebd4a20790ca961ca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elections<\/a> described by human rights and opposition groups as a sham. The vote returned to power <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-politics-president-hlaing-military-election-fca4366fed164acd0fb86d7f13891bc9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Min Aung Hlaing<\/a>, the army chief who led the most recent military takeover in 2021. He and his Cabinet recently examined the giant ruby at his office in the capital, Naypyitaw. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Gemstone mining also serves as a primary source of funding for ethnic armed groups fighting for autonomy, a factor that has helped fuel decades of internal conflict. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The security of these mining regions remains volatile. Mogok <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-rebel-fighting-army-setback-kanpaiti-b9b89e0ffd736e0cedb284543ae1107c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was captured<\/a> in July 2024 by the Ta\u2019ang National Liberation Army, or TNLA, a guerrilla force representing the Palaung ethnic minority.
