{"id":783462,"date":"2026-05-09T04:14:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T04:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/783462\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T04:14:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T04:14:12","slug":"david-pocock-applauds-387m-in-extra-funding-for-csiro-after-tens-of-thousands-sign-petition-australian-budget-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/783462\/","title":{"rendered":"David Pocock applauds $387m in extra funding for CSIRO after tens of thousands sign petition | Australian budget 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Albanese government will boost funding to CSIRO by $387.4m in a bid to meet the long-term costs of the national science agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It follows months of advocacy by scientists and staff after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/nov\/18\/sad-day-for-publicly-funded-science-up-to-350-more-jobs-to-go-at-the-csiro\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of job cuts<\/a> and cost-cutting measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The funding, over four years, will support facilities and technology upgrades and research and is on top of the agency\u2019s existing $1b in annual funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The announcement is not expected to reverse recent decisions to slash hundreds of jobs but it is hoped it might mean further job cuts are avoided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">CSIRO\u2019s annual funding as a percentage of GDP had been falling, with a parliamentary library <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/oct\/14\/albanese-urged-to-secure-the-future-of-science-as-csiro-reckons-with-ongoing-decline-in-funding\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">analysis commissioned by ACT senator David Pocock<\/a> finding it was at its lowest since 1978.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pocock said the additional $387.4m was welcome and \u201creflects huge and effective advocacy from scientists, staff and the community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTens of thousands of people signed my petition to save CSIRO, and alongside other senators I pushed for a Senate inquiry into the agency\u2019s resourcing because Australia can\u2019t afford to keep hollowing out public science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said after years of declining investment, more funding was still needed.
