{"id":783534,"date":"2026-05-09T05:01:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T05:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/783534\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T05:01:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T05:01:22","slug":"cohutta-town-council-meets-after-police-department-dissolved-by-town-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/783534\/","title":{"rendered":"Cohutta Town Council meets after police department dissolved by town mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COHUTTA, Ga. \u2014 <strong>UPDATE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cohutta Town Council voted to reinstate the Cohutta Police department that had previously been dissolved Wednesday by the order of Mayor Ron Shinnick.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people packed the Town Hall today, demanding answers for the ongoing controversy surrounding the police department and the mayor&#8217;s political future. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image: WTVC\" class=\"ImageEmbed_image__qZBo_\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/dbe31164-9bd1-4f11-968a-c6b4c0f9f6a4-0508Cohutta4.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now that the department is reinstated, there are new limits on what they mayor is able to do. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are going to pass an emergency ordinance prohibiting the mayor from disbanding the police department or officer.&#8221; said Vice Mayor Shane Kornberg. &#8220;Officers without action of the town council for the next 30 days.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After that, County Attorney Bryan Rayburn says the council can take up this issue again. <\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers say they stepped in after finding the town&#8217;s charter wasn&#8217;t followed when Mayor Shinnick dissolved the police department. <\/p>\n<p>The charter mandates the Mayor alert the town council at least 30 days before an employee is let go.  The document also requires the Mayor to provide  a clear reason for the employee&#8217;s termination. <\/p>\n<p>As tensions rose during Friday night&#8217;s meeting, the council announced Mayor Shinnick had left the meeting and did not intend on returning. <\/p>\n<p>The meeting also had technical issues, with the power even going out at one point. <\/p>\n<p>Vice Mayor Kornberg eventually took over the meeting after announcing Mayor Shinnick had left, leaving the remaining agenda tabled indefinitely.  <\/p>\n<p>Rayburn says the focus now shifts on getting officers back to work and on patrol again.<\/p>\n<p>Residents we heard from say the top priority is clean:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We want to have the ability to have a police department that can respond to our needs,&#8221; said Larry Green &#8220;Respond to us if we get into emergency.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a developing story. Depend on us as we learn more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EARLIER: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Whitfield County Sheriff&#8217;s Office is now <a href=\"https:\/\/newschannel9.com\/news\/local\/whitfield-county-sheriffs-office-takes-over-after-cohutta-police-department-dissolved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">handling calls for the town.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, the town councilmembers are considering whether to fire the Mayor and reinstate the police department.<\/p>\n<p>The council entered an executive session to discuss legal parameters around the termination of the department shortly after the meeting began. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image: WTVC\" class=\"ImageEmbed_image__qZBo_\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4ce41db4-cbde-4a23-be3a-64115121b4dd-IMG_3652.jpg\"\/>Comment with Bubbles<\/p>\n<p>BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT<\/p>\n<p>This is a developing story.
