But this year, for the first time in nearly 20 years, the parade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/8\/amid-ukraines-daring-assaults-russia-scales-back-victory-day-celebrations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took place without tanks<\/a>, missiles and other heavy weapons, aside from a traditional flyover of combat jets.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the 45-minute parade showed a video of Russian military equipment deployed to Ukraine, said Al Jazeera\u2019s Yulia Shapovalova, reporting from Moscow. She said there is an understanding that \u201ctanks are needed at the [military] front, not at the parade\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the event\u2019s change of format was due to the \u201ccurrent operational situation\u201d and pointed to the threat of Ukrainian attacks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the authorities have taken \u201cadditional security measures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Russia and Ukraine had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/8\/trump-announces-three-day-ceasefire-in-russia-ukraine-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to his request for a ceasefire<\/a> running from Saturday through Monday and an exchange of prisoners, declaring that the break in fighting could be the \u201cbeginning of the end\u201d of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Russia threatens Kyiv if Victory Day disrupted<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said earlier this week that the Russian authorities \u201cfear drones may buzz over Red Square\u201d on May 9, followed up on Trump\u2019s statement by issuing a decree mockingly permitting Russia to hold its Victory Day celebrations on Saturday, declaring Red Square temporarily off-limits for Ukrainian strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Peskov shrugged off Zelenskyy\u2019s decree as a \u201csilly joke.\u201d\u00a0Russian authorities warned that if Ukraine attempted to disrupt Saturday\u2019s festivities, Russia would carry out a \u201cmassive missile strike on the center of Kyiv\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Putin\u2019s address to the parade, attended by Russian military units as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2026\/4\/27\/north-korea-opens-museum-for-troops-killed-fighting-for-russia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soldiers from North Korea<\/a>, the Russian president invoked the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany to rally support for his army in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe great feat of the generation of victors inspires the soldiers carrying out the goals of the special military operation today,\u201d Putin said. \u201cThey are confronting an aggressive force armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc. And despite this, our heroes move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI firmly believe that our cause is just,\u201d he later said.<\/p>\n<p>Victory Day is also observed in other former Soviet states such as Belarus and Kazakhstan.
