{"id":785606,"date":"2026-05-10T02:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T02:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/785606\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T02:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T02:36:15","slug":"unc-professor-calls-on-school-to-rein-in-bill-belichicks-football-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/785606\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC professor calls on school to &#8216;rein in&#8217; Bill Belichick&#8217;s football players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The off-field actions of Bill Belichick\u2019s North Carolina football players have started to raise some alarms at the university, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>One player has been cited at least four times for speeding, two of which include reckless driving charges. <\/p>\n<p>Another was cited three times for speeding, including an instance where they allegedly were driving over 100 mph, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/investigates\/north-carolina-football-speeding-citations-parking-complaints-belichick-cunningham-may-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WRAL reported<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.78086957;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39332900\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chapel-hill-north-carolina-usa-34127080.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of the Kenan Memorial Stadium and campus at UNC Chapel Hill.\" class=\"wp-image-39332900\"  \/>One player has been cited at least four times for speeding, two of which include reckless driving charges.  Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>That player\u2019s car has also been photographed in on-campus parking spots marked for individuals with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The infractions were brought to light in WRAL\u2019s report, which found at least five \u201ctransfers or key players\u201d who have been cited for speeding since January.<\/p>\n<p>The players\u2019 habits have even gotten the attention of UNC instructors, with longtime professor Mark Peifer pleading with university officials to do something about it, according to WRAL.<\/p>\n<p>Peifer said players have parked in spots marked for people with disabilities, sped through narrow parking decks, backed into unauthorized parking spots and have cursed at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there no one who can rein in these players, probably only a subset of the football team, who are tarnishing the reputation of our school and of all Carolina athletes?\u201d Peifer wrote to Bubba Cunningham, UNC\u2019s athletics director, in a recent email.<\/p>\n<p>In a previous email, Cunningham told Peifer that he had addressed the issues to the football program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how many more times I can apologize. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time players from the Tar Heels football program have been hit with driving violations during Belichick\u2019s tenure, with WRAL reporting in November that just under 20 percent of the roster had been cited, amounting to 31 speeding tickets and 10 counts of reckless driving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur conduct outside of the building, outside of the program, is important to us, and we stress that,\u201d Belichick\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/sports\/belichick-unc-speeding-driving-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told WRAL in November<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve addressed multiple things, not just that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are other things that go on, besides driving, that we\u2019ve talked about absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peifer, who teaches near Kenan Memorial Stadium, started to notice large SUVs and expensive sports cars in the nearby parking deck last fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t take a PhD to figure out that these were probably football players,\u201d Peifer said to WRAL. \u201cWhat started to bother all of us, in addition to the fact that they didn\u2019t seem to have to follow the simple parking rules like parking head in, was that now almost always the handicapped spots closest to Kenan in the deck had these cars parked in them. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just not right. You shouldn\u2019t park in a handicap spot.
