But not like this.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw, the founder of long-gone Abernathy\u2019s and Shaw\u2019s in Fort Worth, survived a life-threatening injury, multiple surgeries, infections and cancer to open his newest restaurant, <a data-ylk=\"slk:Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/shawsswgrille.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille<\/a> on the Granbury square.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw, 73, co-owner of <a data-ylk=\"slk:Shaw\u2019s Patio Bar and Grill;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/shawspatio.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Shaw\u2019s Patio Bar and Grill<\/a> on West Magnolia Avenue, was looking forward to opening a new Shaw\u2019s in that <a data-ylk=\"slk:tourist town;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitgranbury.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">tourist town<\/a> 40 miles southwest of Fort Worth.<\/p>\n<p>Then he fell on a heavy metal bolt during construction that stuck deep in the right side of his chest, severing two arteries and chipping his clavicle.<\/p>\n<p>After a series of complications and treatment for prostate cancer, he came back in November. By then, his wife and co-owner Ann Diakis Shaw had opened the newest Shaw\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy, let me tell you,\u201d Shaw said.<\/p>\n<p>He credits the staff at John Peter Smith Hospital\u2019s Level I Trauma Center, where he was rushed Aug. 12 after the accident and returned twice for stays after surgery and heavy antibiotic treatment.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"The tree-shaded back patio at Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille in Granbury, Texas.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_fort_worth_star_telegram_mcclatchy_844\/1a42c2fcd46b18b455fe79181353da.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The tree-shaded back patio at Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille in Granbury, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just like the movies,\u201d he said, \u201cthe way four people came out and started treating me in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What followed was weeks of painful treatment, beginning with packing and repacking the wound. Then came an infection, surgery and more complications.<\/p>\n<p>He thought he was healing. But it hurt to stoop over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said, \u2018You need to come back.\u2019 I was there for another six days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaw is from an <a data-ylk=\"slk:old south Fort Worth family;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tarrantcountytx.gov\/en\/tarrant-county-archives\/image-gallery\/sutherland--doug--shaw-bros--dairy.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">old south Fort Worth family<\/a> that owned Shaw Bros. Creamery in the early 1900s.<\/p>\n<p>But his new neighbors in Granbury were \u201cso sweet\u201d about the delay in Shaw\u2019s opening, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll they asked was how I was doing,\u201d he said \u2014 \u201cthey were just so patient. That\u2019s no longer showing on tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just so happy with this place,\u201d he said, sweeping an arm around the dining room with local art on limestone walls lined with booths and dark wood trim.<\/p>\n<p>Any day now, he plans to open an upstairs bar, Stringfellow\u2019s, in the 150-year-old limestone landmark, an early-1900s Granbury boarding house named City Hotel. He also added a bed-and-breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>In Fort Worth, Shaw also plans to redecorate the Fort Worth restaurant to bring some of the Southwestern menu items and a fresh look.<\/p>\n<p>The top sellers in Granbury, as you might expect, are the chicken-fried steak and chicken-fried chicken in jalape\u00f1o cream gravy, along with the thick poblano-bacon cheeseburgers on sweet Hawaiian buns.<\/p>\n<p>Reviews on social media also praise the piled-high \u201cborder nachos\u201d with brisket, queso, guacamole and charred jalape\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Nachos are topped with brisket, queso, guacamole and jalapenos at Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille in Granbury, Texas.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_fort_worth_star_telegram_mcclatchy_844\/cc0329c678191a7d1d38f8ac250d31.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Nachos are topped with brisket, queso, guacamole and jalapenos at Shaw\u2019s Southwest Grille in Granbury, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The menu is spicier than at the Fort Worth restaurant, with a habanero-serrano-jalape\u00f1o cheeseburger, a chipotle club sandwich and deviled eggs with hot honey shrimp.<\/p>\n<p>A surprise top seller: fish and chips with tempura cod.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant is busy at weekday lunch and all day weekends. He plans street parties for Granbury\u2019s three-day Hometown 4th of July Celebration July 4-6 and parade.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw\u2019s Southwestern Grille is open for lunch and dinner daily except Mondays, with the bar open late on weekends.
