{"id":786171,"date":"2026-05-10T08:46:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T08:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/786171\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T08:46:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T08:46:28","slug":"blake-snell-gets-no-help-from-dodgers-offense-in-loss-to-braves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/786171\/","title":{"rendered":"Blake Snell gets no help from Dodgers&#8217; offense in loss to Braves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-03-13\/blake-snell-throws-first-bullpen-session-spring-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blake Snell<\/a> bobblehead night Saturday at Dodger Stadium but the Atlanta Braves spoiled the left-hander\u2019s season debut with a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/gameday\/braves-vs-dodgers\/2026\/05\/09\/823955\/final\/box\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">7-2<\/a> win.<\/p>\n<p>Making his first major-league appearance since the ninth inning of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-01\/dodgers-defeat-toronto-blue-jays-game-7-comeback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Game 7 of the World Series<\/a>, Snell showed rust early, giving up a leadoff single to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/mauricio-dubon-643289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mauricio Dub\u00f3n<\/a> and walking <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/drake-baldwin-686948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Drake Baldwin<\/a>. Ozzie Albies\u2019 bunt single loaded the bases and after Matt Olson struck out, Dubon scored from third on Austin Riley\u2019s fielder\u2019s choice to shortstop. Snell struck out Michael Harris II to end the inning on his 25th pitch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst outing back, stuff was good,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-04-21\/dodgers-dave-roberts-reply-cubs-craig-counsell-criticism-shohei-ohtani-roster-exception\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dodgers manager Dave Roberts<\/a> said of Snell\u2019s performance. \u201cThere were lots of swings and misses in there. You\u2019re gonna get unlucky with some hits, but give them credit for putting the ball in play. There were a couple bad walks in there that extended innings, but this is something to build off of.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Atlanta loaded the bases again in the second and Albies poked a two-run single to left. Two more runs scored on Olson\u2019s single to right and after an inning and a half the Dodgers trailed 5-0. In the bottom of the inning, Eli White made a sprinting catch on the warning track in right field to rob <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-04-10\/max-muncy-caps-his-3-homer-night-with-walk-off-blast-in-dodgers-win\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Max Muncy<\/a> of extra bases.<\/p>\n<p>Snell started the season on the injured list with left shoulder fatigue and was brought back from his rehab assignment early to replace <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-04-23\/dodgers-tyler-glasnow-eight-shutout-innings-giants\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Glasnow<\/a>, who was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-05-08\/dodgers-tyler-glasnow-blake-snell-mookie-betts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placed on the injured list<\/a> Friday with back spasms. Snell gave up four earned runs on six hits, with two walks and five strikeouts over three innings and 77 pitches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with all the injuries, there\u2019s no excuse,\u201d Snell said. \u201cI feel really good and I wanted this start. As far as how it came together, I don\u2019t know how I feel about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talks to pitcher Blake Snell during a 7-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778402787_595_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talks to pitcher Blake Snell during a 7-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>(Gina Ferazzi \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>While Snell struggled, Atlanta\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/spencer-strider-675911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spencer Strider<\/a> was locked in from the start, giving up one hit and striking out eight  batters in six innings before being relieved by Dylan Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTip your cap to Strider,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cHe flooded the zone with his fastball, he\u2019d get behind and he just had his way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National League East front-runner Atlanta (27-13) widened its gap to eight games over Washington while the Dodgers dropped to 24-15 and saw their  National League West lead narrowed to one game over San Diego, which beat St. Louis 4-2 earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Dreyer, who relieved Snell, gave up one hit in 1\u2153 innings before being relieved by Edgardo Henriquez, who walked Riley and gave up an RBI double to Harris \u2014 the fifth hit in two days for the 2022 NL rookie of the year. Freddie Freeman had two fly outs and a groundout before <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-02-22\/dodgers-dalton-rushing-backup-catcher-will-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dalton Rushing<\/a> took his place at first in the seventh. <\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers avoided their second shutout loss of the season and finally gave the crowd of 50,209 reason to cheer in the ninth when <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-04-06\/dodgers-andy-pages-hot-start-nl-player-of-the-week\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Pages<\/a> belted a two-run home run \u2014 his ninth of the season \u2014 off reliever Reynaldo Lopez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the totality over the last month, yes, we\u2019ve struggled, but Andy\u2019s been a constant,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cEvery at-bat\u2019s important. He\u2019s still swinging a hot bat. It absolutely carries over.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Players on both teams played with heavy hearts following the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-05-09\/bobby-cox-who-guided-braves-1990s-dynasty-dies-at-84\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death of former Braves manager Bobby Cox<\/a> at the age of 84 on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Freeman, in his fifth season of a six-year, $162-million deal with the Dodgers, talked about Cox before the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI woke up to the news this morning,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a sad day in Braves country and all of baseball. My favorite memory of Bobby is seeing joy on his face when he saw my 6-year-old. He had our backs. He wanted to win as much as you do. What stands out is the genuine care he had for every person in that clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first day of spring training I walk in and he joked \u2018Why did it take you so long to get to the big leagues?\u2019 He cared about the 19-year-old and 40-year-old the same way.
