{"id":786395,"date":"2026-05-10T11:13:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T11:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/786395\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T11:13:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T11:13:22","slug":"top-races-to-watch-in-the-may-26-primary-runoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/786395\/","title":{"rendered":"Top races to watch in the May 26 primary runoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both Republicans and Democrats still have key races headed to primary runoffs this month, but so far most of the ads, spending and campaign activity has come from GOP candidates in the weeks leading up to the May 26 election.<\/p>\n<p>A hard-fought Republican U.S. Senate primary between <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-cornyn-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Cornyn<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ken-paxton-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ken Paxton<\/a> is blanketing the airwaves with attack ads. Meanwhile, an expensive Attorney General race and TX35 congressional primary have brought some unusual surrogates to San Antonio \u2014 from U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-san-antonio-fundraiser-carlos-de-la-cruz\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-san-antonio-fundraiser-carlos-de-la-cruz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">RFK Jr.<\/a> \u2014 to help candidates prove their conservative credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have more to decide in local races: A Bexar County District Attorney runoff will determine the odds-on favorite to succeed <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-joe-gonzales-wont-seek-reelection\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-joe-gonzales-wont-seek-reelection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">retiring DA Joe Gonzales<\/a>, and a Texas House race on the West Side will produce the likely replacement for <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/state-rep-ray-lopez-wont-seek-reelection-texas-house-district-125\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/state-rep-ray-lopez-wont-seek-reelection-texas-house-district-125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">retiring state Rep. Ray Lopez (D-San Antonio)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in a year where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/02\/17\/texas-democrats-coordinated-campaign-majority-pac-beto-orourke-2026-elections\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/02\/17\/texas-democrats-coordinated-campaign-majority-pac-beto-orourke-2026-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">some believe the whole state<\/a> could be in play, Bexar County voters will also play a big role in choosing the party\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/23\/texas-2026-attorney-general-democrats-runoff-nathan-johnson-joe-jaworski\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/23\/texas-2026-attorney-general-democrats-runoff-nathan-johnson-joe-jaworski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">nominee to replace Paxton<\/a>, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/24\/texas-2026-lieutenant-governor-democratic-runoff-vikki-goodwin-marcos-velez\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/24\/texas-2026-lieutenant-governor-democratic-runoff-vikki-goodwin-marcos-velez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">take on Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Many November matchups were set after the March primary, where Republicans and Democrats chose their nominees for the general election. But any primary in which no candidate received at least 50% of the vote must be decided by a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a major election year in which both parties are fighting for control of the U.S. House and Senate, nearly all of Texas\u2019 statewide leaders are on the ballot, and retirements and redistricting have left many open seats to fill. <\/p>\n<p>Every Texas voter is eligible to participate in the primary runoff election, but remember, if you voted in the March 3 primary, you\u2019ll have to select the same party\u2019s ticket for the runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Check your voter registration status and download a copy of your <a href=\"https:\/\/tx.omniballot.us\/sites\/48029\/ballot\/app\/sample-ballot\/vr\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/tx.omniballot.us\/sites\/48029\/ballot\/app\/sample-ballot\/vr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">personal sample ballot here<\/a>. Credit: Amber Esparza \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Bexar County District Attorney: Democratic runoff<\/p>\n<p>The race to replace retiring District Attorney Joe Gonzales tops our Races to Watch list because the position has so much influence over public safety \u2014 and because the winner of the Democratic primary is more than likely to carry a blue county in November. <\/p>\n<p>The district attorney is the county\u2019s chief prosecutor, overseeing roughly 600 employees and holding significant discretion over how crimes are charged and prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>But in an unusual election cycle, this is one of several races where a candidate lacking the traditional experience for the role has so far drawn the most energy and enthusiasm from their party\u2019s base.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-may-26-runoff-endorsements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">In DA runoff, Democratic voters weigh change vs. experience<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/luz-elena-chapa-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Luz Elena Chapa<\/a> is a former Fourth Court of Appeals Justice who\u2019s built deep connections with Democratic voters over her multiple countywide campaigns, but never been a prosecutor \u2014 something that alarms some attorneys currently working in the DA\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s tapped into frustration with Gonzales administration to make her case for a fresh perspective \u2014 and even picked up support from law enforcement groups helping her campaign, helping her finish first in an 8-way primary.<\/p>\n<p>Her runoff opponent, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jane-davis-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jane Davis<\/a>, by contrast, has spent nearly her entire career as a prosecutor, and currently oversees the county\u2019s Juvenile Division.<\/p>\n<p>Davis was among several candidates who said they never dreamed of running for DA, but threw their name in the hat when the frontrunner seemed to lack the necessary experience. Now in the runoff, many of those candidates have <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-may-26-runoff-endorsements\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-may-26-runoff-endorsements\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rallied around Davis\u2019 campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will go up against the Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ashley-foster-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ashley Foster<\/a> in a county that\u2019s been trending bluer and bluer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tx35-lujan-de-la-cruz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5440508\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 35th Congressional District: Both parties<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/09\/us\/politics\/trump-texas-redistricting.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/09\/us\/politics\/trump-texas-redistricting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">President Donald Trump\u2019s efforts<\/a> to squeeze more Republican congressional districts out of Texas brought us the new TX35 \u2014 a San Antonio-centric district that stretches east to include three counties Trump carried.<\/p>\n<p>National Democrats say it\u2019s one of their <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/house-majority-san-antonio-congressional-races-tx23-tx35\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/house-majority-san-antonio-congressional-races-tx23-tx35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">biggest battlegrounds of the 2026 midterms<\/a>, while Republicans are more concerned about a proxy war within their own party.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-35-congressional-district-primary-election-results\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Both parties face runoffs in new 35th Congressional District<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The conservative Texas Legislature seemed to draw the district for state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lujan-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Lujan<\/a> (R-San Antonio), who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/state-rep-john-lujan-will-run-in-new-tx35-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">flipped a blue Texas House district<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s entirely within TX35\u2019s boundaries, and who has the backing of Gov. Greg Abbott.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/carlos-de-la-cruz-qa-tx-35-runoff\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/carlos-de-la-cruz-qa-tx-35-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">President Donald Trump and House GOP leaders swooped in<\/a> to endorse a different candidate, retired Air Force veteran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/carlos-de-la-cruz-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Carlos De La Cruz<\/a>, whose sister U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Edinburg) currently represents some of the district\u2019s more rural parts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>National party leaders are now <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/campaign-fundraising-san-antonio-2026-congressional-races-q1\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/campaign-fundraising-san-antonio-2026-congressional-races-q1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spending big to elect<\/a> another Trump ally<strong> <\/strong>in De La Cruz \u2014 while <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lujan-endorsements.jpg\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lujan-endorsements.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lujan\u2019s local backers<\/a> are rallying to promote a candidate they say knows their issues and has valuable legislative experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" data-id=\"5437908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/NorthEastBexarCountyDemocrats_DemocraticPrimaryCandidates_MayRunoffElections_45_04.11.2026_AmberEspa.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437908\"  \/>Longtime Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy Johnny Garcia speaks to voters during a meeting at a North East Bexar County Democrats meeting on April 11. Credit: Amber Esparza \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/house-majority-san-antonio-congressional-races-tx23-tx35\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/house-majority-san-antonio-congressional-races-tx23-tx35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">already reserved ads in TX35<\/a> for the fall \u2014 assuming they get their favored candidate out of their own May 26 primary runoff.<\/p>\n<p>National party leaders like the moderate politics and blue collar background of longtime Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/johnny-garcia-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Garcia<\/a>, they\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/johnny-garcia-political-rise-tx35-congressional-race\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/johnny-garcia-political-rise-tx35-congressional-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spent big building up a first-time candidate<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Garcia\u2019s support from<\/a> a pro-Israel group and the moderate Blue Dogs has given some Democrats pause, and he still faces a progressive primary opponent who\u2019s been attacking him for those connections. <\/p>\n<p>Family therapist <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/maureen-galindo-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maureen Galindo<\/a> broke into local politics as a housing organizer and grabs attention with her unabashedly progressive views. <\/p>\n<p>Her fundraising has been almost nonexistent, but she\u2019s getting help from <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tejano-democrats-galindo.jpg\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tejano-democrats-galindo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Tejano Democrats<\/a>, and a national <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CATargetBot0001\/status\/2052817156698767422\/photo\/1\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CATargetBot0001\/status\/2052817156698767422\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PAC just bought<\/a> some ads on her behalf. Some political operatives believe that group, Lead Left PAC, is <a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/house\/republicans-meddling-house-democratic-primaries\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/house\/republicans-meddling-house-democratic-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">actually Republicans meddling<\/a> in Democratic primaries.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever this district elects in November will have a big job representing San Antonio in a delegation that <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/trump-gop-redistricting-texas-san-antonio-congress-maps\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/trump-gop-redistricting-texas-san-antonio-congress-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">shrunk in redistricting<\/a>, and then lost seasoned members to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/rep-chip-roy-attorney-general-bid-sets-up-open-race-in-deep-red-tx21\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/rep-chip-roy-attorney-general-bid-sets-up-open-race-in-deep-red-tx21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">retirements<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-drops-reelection-bid-tx23-affair\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-drops-reelection-bid-tx23-affair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">scandal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senate: Republican runoff<\/p>\n<p>Statewide, the runoff between U.S. Sen <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-cornyn-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Cornyn<\/a> (R-Texas) and Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ken-paxton-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Paxton<\/a> is the marquee race on the May 26 ballot because either outcome will knock a longtime GOP powerbroker out of office in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, a Paxton victory could make Texas a riper target in the eyes of national Democrats, drawing more money and campaign resources to the state as a whole in 2026. <\/p>\n<p>An ugly, drawn-out runoff was once deemed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/26\/republicans-alarm-grows-about-holding-texas-senate-seat-00799856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">nightmare scenario<\/a>\u201d for Republicans, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/03\/04\/donald-trump-endorsement-texas-senate-primary-runoff-john-cornyn-ken-paxton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump\u2019s plan<\/a> to solve it with an endorsement has yet to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Paxton is under siege from Cornyn\u2019s much better-funded campaign, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=8093282892&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">attacking him over everything from<\/a>\u00a0committing adultery to allegedly stealing a $1,000 Montblanc pen from another lawyer. <\/p>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s wealthiest allies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/05\/us\/ken-paxton-john-cornyn-senate-donors.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/05\/us\/ken-paxton-john-cornyn-senate-donors.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sat on the sidelines<\/a> of this race, but he has a PAC <a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/senate\/paxton-super-pac-florida\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/senate\/paxton-super-pac-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">helping him attack Cornyn<\/a> as insufficiently loyal to the president, and he\u2019s getting help on the campaign trail from friends like <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/KenPaxton_BrandonHerrera_RepublicanVoterSupporters_PoliticalRally_MeetGreetEvent_10_04.30.2026_AmberEsparza-scaled.jpg?mc_cid=835abdc8d0&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/KenPaxton_BrandonHerrera_RepublicanVoterSupporters_PoliticalRally_MeetGreetEvent_10_04.30.2026_AmberEsparza-scaled.jpg?mc_cid=835abdc8d0&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TX23 hopeful Brandon Herrera<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LaHood4Texas\/status\/2050012946512658593?mc_cid=835abdc8d0&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LaHood4Texas\/status\/2050012946512658593?mc_cid=835abdc8d0&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">state Rep. Marc LaHood (R-San Antonio)<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.270towin.com\/2026-senate-polls\/texas#google_vignette\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.270towin.com\/2026-senate-polls\/texas#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Paxton currently leads in most public polling<\/a>, but that was true leading up to the primary as well, and Cornyn wound up finishing first.<\/p>\n<p>Right now Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-talarico-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">James Talarico<\/a> is polling ahead of either GOP nominee \u2014 in part because the runoff has Republicans too preoccupied to attack him.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Attorney General: Both parties<\/p>\n<p>With Attorney General Ken Paxton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-11-12\/paxton-cornyn-senate-election-texas-congress\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">running for U.S. Senate<\/a> instead of reelection, Texans will elect someone new to one of the most powerful statewide positions this year.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s top lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/22\/texas-attorney-general-office-explained-functions\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/22\/texas-attorney-general-office-explained-functions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has plenty of day-to-day responsibilitie<\/a>s, like consumer protection and enforcing anti-trust laws. But in a red state, recent AGs have also used the role to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/13\/texas-attorney-general-gop-runoff-overturn-supreme-court-rulings-chip-roy-mayes-middleton\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/13\/texas-attorney-general-gop-runoff-overturn-supreme-court-rulings-chip-roy-mayes-middleton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">aggressively advance conservative ideology<\/a> through the courts.<\/p>\n<p>As in the Bexar County District Attorney race, so far the frontrunner for that role <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/02\/13\/mayes-middleton-gop-primary-texas-attorney-general-2026\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/02\/13\/mayes-middleton-gop-primary-texas-attorney-general-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has never been a prosecutor<\/a>, and is leaning instead on popularity with his party\u2019s base.<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mayes-middleton-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayes Middleton<\/a> (R-Galveston) is an oil and gas heir whose culture wars at the capitol \u2014 most notably bathroom bills and keeping men out of women\u2019s sports \u2014 have made him popular with the right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[As the AG] you\u2019re not just the chief enforcer, you set the conservative agenda for this entire state,\u201d he said in a Jan. 7 interview at Bigz Burger Joint. \u201cFor seven years, I\u2019ve been writing these laws, drafting them, and defending them against attacks by Democrat lawyers in the Texas House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Middleton is now in a runoff with another popular conservative, U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/chip-roy-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chip Roy<\/a> (R-Dripping Springs), who actually worked in the AG\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was the First Assistant Attorney General [under Paxton]. I\u2019ve been there. I\u2019ve set up the office,\u201d Roy said at the Angry Elephant last week.<\/p>\n<p>But in the face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/16\/texas-attorney-general-fundraising-campaign-finance-donors-2026\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/16\/texas-attorney-general-fundraising-campaign-finance-donors-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">millions of dollars in attack<\/a> ads and recent disagreements <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/01\/24\/chip-roy-donald-trump-threats-00200372\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/01\/24\/chip-roy-donald-trump-threats-00200372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">with President Donald Trump<\/a>, Roy is now being forced to defend his conservative credentials.<\/p>\n<p>At a campaign event in March, Roy spent much of his time reassuring supporters at Blanco BBQ about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/rep-chip-roy-clashed-trump-gop-leaders-launches-bid-texas-ag-rcna226280\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/rep-chip-roy-clashed-trump-gop-leaders-launches-bid-texas-ag-rcna226280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">his relationship with the President<\/a>, reenacting their phone calls and insisting they\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/01\/24\/chip-roy-donald-trump-threats-00200372\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/01\/24\/chip-roy-donald-trump-threats-00200372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">moved past old fights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This month Roy\u2019s colleagues in the House Freedom Caucus started coming to his defense, both with ads and campaign support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery victory that we have had through the Freedom Caucus, through the House of Representatives, and through Congress as a whole, it has been Chip\u2019s mind, offering and orchestrating it every step of the way,\u201d\u00a0U.S. Rep. Lauren\u00a0Boebert (R-CO) said at an  Angry Elephant rally last week.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have their own runoff in this race, between state Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/nathan-johnson-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Johnson<\/a> (D-Dallas) and former Galveston Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/joe-jaworski-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Jaworski<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson flipped a Republican-held state Senate seat in 2018, took a commanding lead in the March primary, and has been campaigning message that AG offices are sometimes the first places where Republican power starts to crumble in red states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is one place right now that could make a difference in how Texas politics advances, it\u2019s the Attorney General\u2019s Office,\u201d he told the Report in December. \u201cWe have simultaneously a destructive force in the Attorney General\u2019s Office, and the absence of the positive force that it\u2019s supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s been under attack from Jaworski, the grandson of the Watergate special prosecutor, who wants Democrats to use the office more like Paxton has, going after their political enemies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a pay-to-play culture in Texas,\u201d Jaworski told the North East Bexar County Democrats. \u201c\u2026 We will go after the Dan Patricks and the Greg Abbotts, when they take billionaires\u2019 money and try to ruin people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Texas House District 125: Democratic runoff<\/p>\n<p>Longtime state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/state-rep-ray-lopez-wont-seek-reelection-texas-house-district-125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ray Lopez (D-San Antonio) is retiring<\/a> from this reliably blue seat, and the Democratic primary to replace him is now down to two candidates.<\/p>\n<p>SAISD history teacher and union leader <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/adrian-reyna-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Adrian Reyna<\/a> says he\u2019s running because he grew tired of watching state lawmakers meddle with educators and school funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attacks on public education that we\u2019ve seen in the last year are insane. They have absolutely handicapped us in our ability to do our job,\u201d said Reyna, whose dad once held the seat he\u2019s now running for.<\/p>\n<p>He finished first in the primary with the help of the Texas Organizing Project, and is now in a runoff with former Bexar County Constable <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/michelle-barrientes-vela-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Michelle Barrientes Vela<\/a>, who boxed out Lopez\u2019s chief of staff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-district-125-primary-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Westside Texas House primary heads to runoff between union leader, scandal-plagued ex-constable<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While she was a constable, Barrientes Vela was accused of tampering with security payment logs at Rodriguez Park. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/ksat-investigates\/2025\/02\/19\/sources-barrientes-vela-acquittal-final-as-appeals-court-declines-to-review-decision\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/ksat-investigates\/2025\/02\/19\/sources-barrientes-vela-acquittal-final-as-appeals-court-declines-to-review-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">later acquitted<\/a>, and has now folded that experience into her campaign pitch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy return to politics is not about politics,\u201d she said at a Tejano Democrats forum in January. \u201cIt\u2019s about someone with law enforcement experience, someone who\u2019s been a victim of the abuse of power, and someone that knows the passion to fight against an unjust system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the Democratic primary runoff will face Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ricardo-rick-martinez-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-125\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ricardo Martinez<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Bexar County Clerk and District Clerk: Democratic runoffs<\/p>\n<p>Bexar County Clerk <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/lucy-adame-clark-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-clerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lucy Adame-Clark<\/a> and District Clerk <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/gloria-a-martinez-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-clerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gloria Martinez<\/a> were both held below 50% by challengers in the March primary, and now face runoffs to hang onto their party\u2019s nominations for November.<\/p>\n<p>In both races, challengers say the incumbent hasn\u2019t done enough to modernize the office and bring records online. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-clerk-district-clerk-primaries-head-to-runoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bexar County Clerk, District Clerk primaries head to runoffs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adame-Clark\u2019s race with <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/cynthia-castro-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-clerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cynthia Castro<\/a> grew <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-clerk-district-clerk-primaries-head-to-runoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ugly and personal<\/a> over a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/article\/judge-child-abuse-conflict-21232718.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">disagreement about a case<\/a>\u00a0in Castro\u2019s husband\u2019s courtroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/gloria-martinez-christine-castillo-rematch-bexar-county-district-clerk-runoff\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/gloria-martinez-christine-castillo-rematch-bexar-county-district-clerk-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Martinez faces a rematch<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/christine-chris-castillo-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-clerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Christine \u201cChris\u201d Castillo<\/a>, who she defeated in a runoff in 2022. Both had lengthy careers at the office, and then were pushed out of their roles by former District Clerk Mary Angie Garcia, who they kept from advancing from her own party\u2019s primary that year.<\/p>\n<p>Neither race drew a Republican candidate, so the Democratic primary winners will likely be unopposed in November. <\/p>\n<p>Texas Court of Criminal Appeals: Republican runoff<\/p>\n<p>The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/11\/06\/court-of-criminal-appeals-2024-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">experienced major turnover<\/a> in last cycle\u2019s primary last election, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/03\/06\/texas-court-of-criminal-appeals-republican-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Attorney General Ken Paxton campaigned <\/a>to replace three long-serving Republican judges who said he didn\u2019t have broad authority to prosecute election fraud.<\/p>\n<p>This year, two of the remaining GOP judges on ruling retired instead of seeking reelection, and one of those races is headed to a runoff where fallout from the Paxton ruling still looms large.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are choosing between <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/alison-fox-2026-candidate-for-texas-criminal-court-of-appeals-place-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alison Fox<\/a>, a research attorney on the court who previously worked in the Bexar County DA\u2019s office, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/thomas-smith-2026-candidate-for-texas-supreme-court-place-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Thomas Smith<\/a>, who worked under Paxton in both the AG\u2019s office and his Texas Senate office.<\/p>\n<p>Fox was working on the court when her boss, Judge Jesse McClure, authored the 2021 opinion that offended Paxton \u2014 a \u201cscary time\u201d because they received death threats from fellow Republicans, she said. <\/p>\n<p>But she loves the work overall, and when Richardson\u2019s position opened up, she said she decided to run because \u201cthis is the supreme criminal court\u00a0of Texas, and I think that it deserves experienced practitioners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith has never practiced criminal law in Texas, but said on social media that he was running because he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nancy.white.878869\/posts\/texas-deserves-judges-on-the-court-of-criminal-appeals-who-will-faithfully-apply\/832017713070886\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nancy.white.878869\/posts\/texas-deserves-judges-on-the-court-of-criminal-appeals-who-will-faithfully-apply\/832017713070886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tired of the court electing<\/a> \u201cpolitical chameleons.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/elections\/2026\/texas-court-of-criminal-appeals-race-raises-judicial-ethics-recusal-concerns\/article_6c8635ee-9b91-4118-9923-311061f02c60.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/elections\/2026\/texas-court-of-criminal-appeals-race-raises-judicial-ethics-recusal-concerns\/article_6c8635ee-9b91-4118-9923-311061f02c60.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">He blamed the court<\/a> for stripping power from Paxton\u2019s office, and linked Fox to the decision authored by her boss. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans have controlled every statewide bench seat for many years, but the winner will face Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/okey-anyiam-2026-candidate-for-texas-criminal-court-of-appeals-place-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Okey Anyiam<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Worth a watch<\/p>\n<p>Texas Senate District 19: Republican runoff<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are coming after Democratic state Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/roland-gutierrez-2026-candidate-for-texas-senate-district-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Roland Gutierrez<\/a> (D-San Antonio) this year, but haven\u2019t yet locked down the candidate to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez is a regular critic of GOP state leaders, and Gov. Greg Abbott threw his support behind Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/marcus-cardenas-2026-candidate-for-texas-senate-district-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Marcus Cardenas<\/a> to challenge him. <\/p>\n<p>Cardenas took 44% in a three-way primary, and now faces a GOP primary runoff with <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/robert-marks-jr-2026-candidate-for-texas-senate-district-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Robert Marks Jr.<\/a>, who took 32%.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Lieutenant Governor: Democratic runoff<\/p>\n<p>Republican Lt. Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/dan-patrick-2026-candidate-for-lieutenant-governor-of-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dan Patrick<\/a> is seeking a fourth term, and Democrats have been divided over who they want to go up against the formidable incumbent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most well-known candidate in the race is state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/vikki-goodwin-2026-candidate-for-lieutenant-governor-of-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Vikki Goodwin<\/a> (D-Austin), who took 48% in the first round. But in an effort to find candidates they believe could appeal to working class voters, labor groups have been backing <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/marcos-isaias-velez-2026-candidate-for-lieutenant-governor-of-texas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcos Isaias V\u00e9lez<\/a>, a leader in the United Steelworkers, who took 31%.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the North East Bexar County Democrats, Goodwin said her four terms in the legislature have given her the relationships and legislative savvy needed for the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLieutenant Governor is the most powerful position in Texas, and it is not a position for on the job training,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>V\u00e9lez has some deep-pocketed Democratic supporters, but struggled to sell voters on how his experience translates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe role of Lieutenant Governor is largely a role of negotiation,\u201d he told the North East Bexar County Democrats. \u201cEvery single day, [the steelworkers union goes] up against the power, and we win by using the power of the people. It\u2019s going to be a hostile environment. But ultimately, the lieutenant governor prioritizes legislation more so than writes it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>County Court at Law No. 10: Democratic runoff<\/p>\n<p>The March primary election saw <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/six-san-antonio-area-judges-fall-in-democratic-primary-upsets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six incumbent Democratic judges<\/a> fall to primary challengers.<\/p>\n<p>Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/cesar-garcia-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-court-at-law-no-10\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cesar Garcia<\/a> wasn\u2019t among them, but he was pushed to a runoff with <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/shannon-roberta-salmon-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-court-at-law-no-10\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shannon Roberta Salm\u00f3n<\/a>, an\u00a0attorney and mediator who previously worked as a prosecutor in Bexar County.<\/p>\n<p>No Republicans filed for this race.<\/p>\n<p>Railroad Commission of Texas: Republican runoff<\/p>\n<p>The Railroad Commission of Texas oversees the state\u2019s oil and gas industry, and its three members serve staggered six-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>Just one of them, Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jim-wright-2026-candidate-for-texas-railroad-commissioner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Wright<\/a>, is up for reelection this year, and faced a five-way GOP primary.
