Curved walls coated in textured, terracotta<\/a>-toned plaster wrap this circular<\/a> home in Indonesia<\/a>, designed by local architecture practice Caceres + Tous.<\/p>\n

Named House Kala, the dwelling is set atop a hill on the Indonesian island of Lombok, on a site with almost 360-degree views of the sea and surrounding forest.<\/p>\n

To maximise views from the site, Caceres + Tous<\/a> created a circular home raised on a stone plinth, contrasting an exposed facade of full-height glass doors with a secluded inner patio wrapped by curving walls.<\/p>\n

The reddish-brown plaster used to coat these walls was created to mimic the tone of the soil in Lombok, where clay bricks are used in many vernacular buildings.<\/p>\n

“The core concept was to create a private refuge for the owner on a site with 360-degree exposure,” Caceres + Tous co-founder Nico Caceres told Dezeen.<\/p>\n

“The circular form given by the land position creates an outward-facing open shape while maintaining an enclosed, private patio at its centre,” he continued.<\/p>\n

“While the outer perimeter opens to the views and follows the sun throughout the day, the internal patio acts as a sanctuary, enclosed by a screen that provides the main circulation.”<\/p>\n

The spaces of House Kala were organised based on the expansive views, with a large, semicircular living, dining and kitchen space positioned in the most exposed area overlooking the sea and sunset to the southwest.<\/p>\n

Glass doors framed by chunky terracotta-toned columns allow this space to open out onto a terrace with both a decorative shallow infinity pool and a swimming pool.<\/p>\n

To the northeast the home’s bedrooms are positioned to capture the sunrise, opposite a games room and cinema. Connecting all of the home’s spaces is a circular corridor that wraps the central patio, which is surrounded by a curved wall.<\/p>\n

Overlapping with this patio is a circular entrance space where a small pool sits beneath a circular opening that allows rainwater through.<\/p>\n

These circular openings continue throughout the home in the form of glazed skylights positioned in the bedrooms and above a seating area in the lounge.<\/p>\n

The terracotta-toned walls that define much of House Kala’s interior are complemented by dark stained timber carpentry that lines the ceilings and bedroom walls, as well as custom terrazzo floors and black aluminium window frames.<\/p>\n

Caceres was founded Caceres + Tous in Indonesia in 2015 alongside interior designer Kiko Tous. Other homes in the country recently featured on Dezeen include Villa Omah Prana in Bali by architect Alexis Dornier,<\/a> another circular home that is topped by a large shingle roof.<\/p>\n
