According to studio estimates Sunday, \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d earned a chart topping $43 million in its second weekend, while \u201cMortal Kombat II\u201d took in $40 million in its first.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend had wide variety of newcomers playing in wide release, including the family-friendly whodunnit <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sheep-detectives-movie-review-faea80783a50acc254f182f9dfc8e80a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Sheep Detectives\u201d<\/a> and a James Cameron co-directed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/billie-eilish-james-cameron-concert-film-1254c753050814438974f97b7c935e77\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billie Eilish concert film<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it was the holdover that triumphed. \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d which has grossed $433.2 million worldwide in its first 12 days in release, helped push The Walt Disney Studios over $2 billion globally for the year. It\u2019s also surpassed the total grosses of the first film, which earned $327 million globally in 2006, not accounting for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for Comscore, said Mother\u2019s Day might have helped \u201cPrada\u201d get the advantage over the newcomer and have such a modest 44% dip in weekend two. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe release date was perfect,\u201d Dergarabedian said. \u201cThis may be the new blueprint for how to start a summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMortal Kombat II\u201d provided some gendered counterprogramming in the second weekend of Hollywood\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/summer-movie-preview-2026-b09b6e9cd8c679a07b95ce5cc7512a74\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">summer movie season<\/a>. Warner Bros. opened the movie in 3,503 locations where it drew a heavily male audience. According to PostTrak, 75% of the ticket buyers were men. \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d had almost the exact opposite gender breakdown on <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/devil-wears-prada-2-box-office-4a36472a6bc5b3ac48097d3a823d3a10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its first weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first movie in this series, \u201cMortal Kombat,\u201d was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 as a part of Warner Bros.\u2019 pandemic-era day-and-date strategy. Reviews have been mixed for the sequel, as was its B CinemaScore. It also earned $23 million from 78 markets internationally, adding up to a $63 million global debut.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michael-jackson-movie-review-c1c8ba4f0a10421e507934b2d6c92358\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMichael\u201d<\/a> landed in third place in its third weekend with another $36.5 million over the weekend, down only 33% from last weekend. The Michael Jackson biopic has now earned $240.5 million in North America, surpassing the total domestic grosses of \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d and $577.4 million globally.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth place went to Amazon MGM Studios\u2019 \u201cThe Sheep Detectives\u201d which brought in $15.9 million in its first weekend in 3,457 theaters. The <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sheep-detectives-movie-c4b49bf526f158bcaa22d06e12ff8ef7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quirky, all-ages murder mystery<\/a> features a starry ensemble including Hugh Jackman, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/summer-movie-preview-2026-b09b6e9cd8c679a07b95ce5cc7512a74\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emma Thompson<\/a> and Nicholas Braun, as well as the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall and Patrick Stewart as the sheep who try to figure out who murdered their shepherd. Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. The movie cost a reported $75 million to produce. <\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the top five was \u201cBillie Eilish\u2014Hit Me Hard &amp; Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)\u201d an immersive concert experience which Cameron shared co-directing credits on with Eilish. Paramount released the movie in 2,613 theaters, where it earned $7.5 million in North America and $12.6 million internationally. The movie was very well reviewed by critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences, who gave it an A CinemaScore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d in its eighth weekend, and \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie,\u201d in its sixth weekend, are still going strong as well \u2014 adding up to a weekend that is up significantly from the same weekend last year.
