V\u00e1squez\/AP<\/p>\n<p>Kate Martin is Hollywood-bound.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Martin, a 2018 Edwardsville High School graduate, signed a player development deal with the Los Angeles Sparks on March 10, according to the organization. The signing came three days after the 6-foot-2 shooting guard was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theintelligencer.com\/sports\/article\/edwardsville-il-kate-martin-waived-22247208.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">waived by the Golden State Valkyries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>WNBA teams are allowed two developmental roster spots, giving them an internal training system that operates outside the salary cap. Players in those roles can practice with the team, earn stipends and benefits, and be activated for as many as 12 games.<\/p>\n<p>The Sparks made clear they view Martin as more than a temporary addition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a great get for us. I\u2019m thrilled how that turned out,\u201d Los Angeles coach Lynn Roberts said. \u201cHer presence and leadership \u2014 that is a future coach, you could just tell. I was so impressed with her knowledge of the game. Basketball-wise, she can shoot it. There\u2019s no secret I love shooters. This is a great add. Her work ethic is unbelievable, which is what makes her special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sparks general manager Raegan Pebley echoed the sentiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKate is a gifted shooter whose grittiness and winning history mesh well with Sparks basketball,\u201d Pebley said in a press release. \u201cShe\u2019s confident in her shot, plays tenacious defense and is an unselfish, high-energy teammate. We\u2019re eager to watch Kate develop within our system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin enters the organization with a chance to compete for a full-time roster spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants to make the roster. I\u2019m glad she said it,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to pour into working with her, developing her and getting her comfortable, and then we\u2019ll see where we go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles went 21-23 last season and has reshaped its roster during the offseason, adding former league MVP Nneka Ogwumike and Kelsey Plum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Martin spent last season with Golden State, averaging 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds in 42 games after the Valkyries selected her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theintelligencer.com\/sports\/article\/kate-martin-selected-golden-state-valkyries-draft-19971227.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the expansion draft<\/a> following her rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas originally selected Martin in the second round of the 2024 WNBA Draft with the 18th overall pick following her standout career at Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKate is great in the locker room and is a great teammate. She is a very hard worker,\u201d Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon said. \u201cShe was someone who came in with pro habits, and that\u2019s hard to do coming out of college. She came in and was a nice piece for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin finished her Iowa career with 1,299 points, 756 rebounds, 473 assists, 148 steals and 70 blocks in 163 games. She remains the only player in program history with at least 900 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 120 steals and 60 blocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeyes made two NCAA Tournament championship game appearances, won three straight Big Ten Tournament championships and won 109 games in Martin\u2019s final four seasons in Iowa City.<\/p>\n<p>At Edwardsville, Martin scored 1,516 career points and helped the Tigers reach the state tournament twice, including a second-place finish in 2017.
