{"id":787573,"date":"2026-05-10T23:46:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T23:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/787573\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T23:46:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T23:46:24","slug":"hope-for-endangered-watsons-tree-frog-as-tadpoles-released-into-wild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/787573\/","title":{"rendered":"Hope for endangered Watson&#8217;s tree frog as tadpoles released into wild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Scientists hope the baritone call of an endangered native frog that lost most of its habitat in the Black Summer bushfires will be heard in the wild again thanks to a captive breeding program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The endangered Watson&#8217;s tree frog is native to eastern Victoria and south-eastern New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">About 80 per cent of the frog&#8217;s habitat was lost in the bushfires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Victoria&#8217;s far East Gippsland region it is only known to remain at 10 sites, with breeding only observed at half of those locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Scientists from Zoos Victoria and the organisation Wild Research released 200 froglets and 1,200 tadpoles from a breeding program for the first time this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with a beard, wears a black shirt and cap, standing in the forest. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5190050ebfe6b5c8187a8d2f76f676b0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Matt West says there have been limited sightings of the Watson&#8217;s tree frog in the wild.\u00a0 (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wild Research project leader Matt West said he hoped the release marked a turning point for the species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s great news because we only know of the frog at 10 small sites, and these releases have allowed us to reintroduce the frog to an additional 30 sites,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A unique icon<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Watson&#8217;s tree frogs are about 6 centimetres in size, with brown colouring and bright orange thighs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Listed as nationally endangered, the species is rare and hard to find in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The frogs are members of the whistling tree frog family, but unlike their cousins the frogs have a slow baritone call.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A brown frog sits on a fern leaf in a forest. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6546ff3a3cac704018ba6b48391d8d35.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Watson&#8217;s tree frog was feared extinct after there were no sightings in the wild for 19 years.\u00a0 (Supplied: Zoos Victoria)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They have a very distinctive call and a very distinctive smell. (Supplied: Stephen Mahony)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the species is under threat, with habitat destruction and disease causing numbers to dwindle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The 2019-2020 bushfires burnt about 80 per cent of the frog&#8217;s habitat, and we think that&#8217;s one of the things that has contributed to the frog&#8217;s decline,&#8221; Dr West said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;In fact, we now only know of a frog at about 10 sites that are no bigger than a size of a kid&#8217;s swimming pool, and they&#8217;re only breeding at about five of those sites.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The frogs have also been threatened by the infectious disease chytridiomycosis, which is caused by chytrid fungus, along with introduced species such as deer and pigs disturbing the frogs&#8217;
