{"id":788002,"date":"2026-05-11T04:27:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T04:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/788002\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T04:27:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T04:27:28","slug":"after-joining-yashar-ex-head-of-shin-bet-says-smotrich-a-legitimate-partner-but-not-ben-gvir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/788002\/","title":{"rendered":"After joining Yashar, ex-head of Shin Bet says Smotrich a &#8216;legitimate&#8217; partner, but not Ben Gvir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is a \u201clegitimate\u201d political partner, said former Shin Bet chief Yoram Cohen, who earlier in the week announced he was running for the Knesset with Gadi Eisenkot\u2019s centrist Yashar party.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Saturday with Channel 12 news, Cohen called Smotrich a \u201cZionist\u201d and a \u201cpatriot\u201d who served in the military, stating that \u201cfor all these reasons, he is legitimate\u201d even though some of his statements and policies are \u201cimmature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smotrich\u2019s far-right Religious Zionism party has consistently been polling under the electoral threshold.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, whose ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit party ran together with Smotrich\u2019s Religious Zionism in the last election, is not a legitimate partner, Cohen insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Gvir, who has previous convictions for incitement to racism and supporting a terrorist organization, was not conscripted because of his extremist background. More recently, he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/extremist-mk-ben-gvir-pulls-out-gun-during-sheikh-jarrah-clashes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brandished his own handgun<\/a> on several occasions and was summoned for a talk by the Knesset security chief in 2021 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/ag-closes-probe-into-ben-gvir-for-pulling-pistol-on-arab-security-guards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he drew a pistol<\/a> during an argument with Arab parking attendants in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cohen, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/former-shin-bet-chief-yoram-cohen-joins-eisenkots-yashar-party\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on Tuesday he was entering politics and joining Eisenkot\u2019s party, said he did so in response to what he called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s failures, warning it will be \u201ccatastrophic\u201d for the country if the current government is reelected.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/03\/F260329YS28.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3790788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/F260329YS28-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tFinance Minister Bezalel Smotrich holds a press conference ahead of final votes on the 2026 state budget at the Knesset in Jerusalem, March 29, 2026. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I hadn\u2019t seen the behavior of Mr. Netanyahu, of his government, of the failures\u2026 of the future risk, I wouldn\u2019t have entered politics,\u201d he said in the TV interview.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen objected to the inclusion in the Netanyahu government \u2014 which is currently advancing an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/legally-iffy-and-loophole-laden-new-haredi-draft-bill-a-recruitment-boon-for-yeshivas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evasion law<\/a>\u201d \u2014 of \u201cnon-Zionist\u201d elements who \u201cdo not serve in the army, and send our children to repeated wars while they themselves do not serve,\u201d referring to the coalition\u2019s two ultra-Orthodox parties.<\/p>\n<p>He also denounced ministers \u201cwho have a criminal background and administer the law\u201d in apparent reference to Ben Gvir, whose ministry oversees the police and has been accused of unduly influencing law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/03\/F250319YS430.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3506653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/F250319YS430-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (left) and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir (right) in the Knesset plenum in Jerusalem, March 19, 2025. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Cohen slammed Netanyahu for refusing to allow a state commission of inquiry to investigate the failures surrounding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. \u201cI am surprised at us, too, at our public that gives legitimacy to people who stood at the head of the system on October 7, for example, the prime minister specifically, who also shaped the policy in the preceding years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The former Shin Bet head additionally castigated Netanyahu for his attacks on the judiciary and law enforcement, repeating a previous claim that Netanyahu once asked him to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ex-shin-bet-chief-netanyahu-asked-me-to-disqualify-bennett-from-security-cabinet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disqualify<\/a>\u201d political rival Naftali Bennett from his security cabinet by revoking Bennett\u2019s security clearance. Netanyahu\u2019s office has denied the claim and accused Cohen of making it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I wouldn\u2019t do it. (Abir Sultan\/Pool\/via AP)<\/p>\n<p>He further accused the prime minister of attempting to employ the Shin Bet against his political rivals in 2019, when Netanyahu allegedly phoned Cohen\u2019s successor as Shin Bet chief, Nadav Argaman, to demand he declare Benny Gantz unfit to be prime minister due to reports the Blue and White party leader\u2019s phone was allegedly hacked by Iranian operatives.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen has also previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/ex-shin-bet-chief-says-pm-asked-him-to-carry-out-illegitimate-acts-worries-agencys-next-head-wont-refuse-such-demands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claimed<\/a> that during his tenure, Netanyahu asked him more than once to carry out \u201cillegitimate acts,\u201d such as requesting that he wiretap the government\u2019s top defense officials to ensure they were not leaking information from a particularly sensitive security meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu moved from targeting individuals to launching attacks on the entire system after his criminal indictment for corruption in late 2019, Cohen asserted in Saturday night\u2019s interview, accusing the premier of appointing officials based on \u201cpersonal loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F260327CG17.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3799679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F260327CG17-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tShin Bet director David Zini attends the funeral of an Israeli at the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem, March 27, 2026, (Chaim Goldberg\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>He said current Shin Bet chief David Zini will need a \u201ca strong backbone\u201d to stand up to inappropriate demands from Netanyahu and that he is worried about Zini\u2019s stance on several issues, including the postponement of hearings in Netanyahu\u2019s criminal trial for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/shin-bet-chief-reportedly-tells-court-pm-cant-testify-at-trial-over-danger-to-life\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ostensible security reasons<\/a> and the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/shin-bet-quietly-reverses-ban-on-urich-accessing-prime-ministers-office-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qatargate<\/a> scandal involving aides to Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he would sit in government with Arab parties, Cohen replied that to be partners they would need to recognize Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, back universal military and national service as well as support the principles of Israel\u2019s Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny party that agrees to these three parameters will be relevant,\u201d Cohen said.<\/p>\n<p>He added, however, that he would not want to have to rely on an Arab party for the coalition to muster a Knesset majority, instead backing a \u201cZionist\u201d majority coalition that others could then join.<\/p>\n<p>Smotrich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/smotrich-including-arab-party-in-government-a-thousand-times-worse-than-oct-7-failures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sparked an uproar<\/a> last week when he asserted that Bennett\u2019s decision to include the Islamist Ra\u2019am party in his 2021-2022 government was far worse than the governmental failures to prevent the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities, which marked the deadliest attack in Israel\u2019s history and for Jews since the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen also declared he has no ambition to be prime minister, refused to state a preference for any ministerial portfolio, and said he is committed to serving a full term in the Knesset, but made no further promises.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tYou appreciate our wartime journalism\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DH-new-headshot-circular-200x200.png\" class=\"attachment-square size-square wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"crm-article-popup__counter-wrap\" style=\"display:none\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re really pleased that you\u2019ve read <strong> X Times of Israel articles<\/strong> in the past month.&#13;\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>You clearly find our careful reporting of the Iran war valuable, at a time when facts are often distorted and news coverage often lacks context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your support is essential to continue our work.<\/strong> We want to continue delivering the professional journalism you value, even as the demands on our newsroom have grown dramatically during this ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n<p>So today, please consider joining our reader support group, <strong>The Times of Israel Community<\/strong>.
