MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014<\/strong> San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ejected for throwing an elbow at the throat of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid early in the second quarter of Game 4<\/a> of their rugged Western Conference semifinal series<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama was whistled for an offensive foul as soon as he struck Reid, who had swarmed the Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year<\/a> outside the paint along with teammate Jaden McDaniels after the 7-foot-4 Spurs center rebounded a missed 3-pointer.<\/p>\n

After a video review of the play, with the fans at Target Center chanting, \u201cKick him out! Kick him out!,\u201d the foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 for excessive contact above the neck.<\/p>\n

That penalty triggers an automatic ejection, immediately swinging the balance of a pivotal game in the series toward the Timberwolves.<\/p>\n

When the penalty was announced<\/strong>, Wembanyama appeared to ask teammate Harrison Barnes:\u00a0\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

After he slapped hands with each of his Spurs teammates on his way off the floor, with the arena sound system blaring Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cBeat it!,\u201d Reid sank both free throws to give the Timberwolves a 38-34 lead.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama finished with four points, four rebounds and three fouls in 13 minutes of the 114-109 loss.<\/p>\n

With Reid, Julius Randle and McDaniels in their frontcourt, the Timberwolves had plenty of muscle and tenacity\u00a0to send at Wembanyama, even if he\u2019s been\u00a0good enough offensively to overcome it.
