{"id":78829,"date":"2025-07-20T20:07:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T20:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/78829\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T20:07:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T20:07:14","slug":"development-black-hole-remains-on-west-57th-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/78829\/","title":{"rendered":"Development black hole remains on West 57th Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues exemplifies Manhattan\u2019s regenerative energy, the block east between Fifth and Sixth avenues remains a black hole of development ambition.<\/p>\n<p>The 900-foot-long\u00a0block \u2014 longer than three and a half midtown north-south blocks \u2014 looks gloomier\u00a0every year as\u00a0landowners hold out for magic-bullet combos of tenant commitments and construction financing.<\/p>\n<p>West of Bergdorf Goodman and the Crown Building stretches a procession of vacant lots,\u00a0empty storefronts and scaffolding.\u00a0At least four enormous sites await activity. Developers including Vornado, Lefrak, Soloviev, and at least one unknown outfit have kept their sites barren for years.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.33333333;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36590865\" width=\"787\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/black-hole-5th-6th-ave-108470724.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site fence with Soloviev logo.\" class=\"wp-image-36590865\"  \/>There is a string of vacant lots, empty storefronts and scaffolding on West 57th Street west of Bergdorf Goodman and the Crown Building. New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The latest blows to \u00a0the block were the closings of Brasserie 8 and a Half at Soloviev\u2019s 9 West and Rue 57 at the western corner. The\u00a0opening soon of a small Abel Richard handbags boutique at 7 West is more than offset by large retail vacancies on either side of Nobu at 40 W. 57th and at the former locations of Mangia and other shops and cafes.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan-based developer Sedesco, meanwhile, is demolishing a building to enlarge a site it\u2019s been assembling for more than 10 years between\u00a037-47 W. 57th St.<\/p>\n<p>The supertall, mixed-use project is to be designed by \u201cstarchitect\u201d Rem Koolhaas\u2019 OMA studio. It will likely re-energize its surroundings.
