{"id":78833,"date":"2025-07-20T20:09:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T20:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/78833\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T20:09:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T20:09:10","slug":"new-yorkers-argue-over-where-upstate-begins-but-fuming-westchester-residents-say-not-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/78833\/","title":{"rendered":"New Yorkers argue over where Upstate begins &#8212; but fuming Westchester residents say &#8216;not here&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s an \u201cUp\u201d setting debate for suburbanites.<\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers have argued over where \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/13\/us-news\/rochester-describes-close-encounter-with-mountain-lion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstate<\/a>\u201d begins for decades \u2013 with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/17\/us-news\/nypd-cop-swiped-87k-from-elderly-wells-fargo-clients-to-pay-for-booty-exercises-bmw-and-tropical-getaway-da\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westchester County <\/a>residents notoriously thin-skinned about being told they\u2019re on the \u201cup\u201d side of the invisible border.<\/p>\n<p>The Post recently visited the Westchester city of Yonkers at the edge of the Bronx, hunting for the long-elusive line of demarcation and asking locals and passersby if this is the spot where Upstate begins.<\/p>\n<p>East-facing view of McLean Ave. Tomas E. Gaston<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not,\u201d declared 33-year-old Yonkers resident Reaghan Giannello as she walked along McLean Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/20\/us-news\/bronx-zoos-world-of-darkness-exhibit-reopens-after-16-year-hiatus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronx<\/a> is one street over. Depending on where I am in my apartment, my GPS says New York City or Yonkers,\u201d the recreational therapist added. \u201cSpend a minute talking to us, we sound like we\u2019re from the Bronx. Upstate they say things differently. We\u2019re not in the city, but we\u2019re close enough. We don\u2019t have cows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While many Gotham residents have long labeled anything beyond Yankee Stadium and the reaches of the subway \u201cupstate,\u201d Giannello was among the numerous suburbanites to snap back at that suggestion \u2013 while offering other questionable spots for the designation.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed Dutchess County \u2013 a roughly 100-mile trip from <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/16\/real-estate\/former-migrant-shelter-in-nyc-to-become-apartments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midtown Manhattan<\/a> \u2013 had upstate vibes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019re starting to get cows and horses. We have street lights here, that\u2019s how you know you\u2019re not in the country yet,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>McKeon\u2019s Bar and Restaurant bartender James Flynn said once a traveler reaches the state capital, Albany, they\u2019re downstate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not upstate. Bronx is right there,\u201d he said as he gestured across the street. \u201cThe 4 train comes here, the Metro North.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The owner of Angelo\u2019s Pizza in Yonkers was even more blunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can call it anything you want, but it\u2019s not upstate,\u201d Steve Ugrinag, 65, said.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Ugrinag, 65, owner of Angelo\u2019s Pizza on McLean Ave in Yonkers Khristina Narizhnaya\/NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Mili Diaz, a floral assistant and Blossom Flowers in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/16\/us-news\/ny-gym-teacher-got-creepy-with-female-student-using-dog-collar-then-threatened-to-stalk-her-prosecutors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yonkers<\/a> admitted when she used to live in the Big Apple, she dubbed anything north of Inwood upstate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was just like crossing the bridge to me was like, you know, just another world,\u201d Diaz argued. \u201cAnything like past Inwood felt like really, really far, but it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, she thinks anything past White Plains \u2013 a mere 15 miles from Yonkers and also in Westchester \u2013 is upstate.<\/p>\n<p>McKeon\u2019s Bar and Restaurant bartender James Flynn said once a traveler reaches the state capital, Albany, they\u2019re downstate. Gaston<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe area I go to my vet, my vet is in Bedford Hills, it\u2019s all green, like it\u2019s the feeling of it, the vibe is so different,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>A White Plains native turned Florida-based rapper LYPHE even made a rap about people calling Westchester upstate more than a decade ago as part of a magazine interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstate is the place where you see, all the farms with cows like Albany,\u201d part of the rhymes goes. \u201cYou comparing who? Where we choose to share the views. We can see the skyline in our backyard we not scary dudes from Syracuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rapper, 47, who once lived in Yonkers, called it offensive to suggest anywhere in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/14\/us-news\/fired-ny-cop-cleared-on-charges-he-kicked-punched-suspect-10-times-in-caught-on-camera-scuffle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westchester<\/a> is upstate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the stigma that anyone born or raised outside the New York City border can\u2019t be classified as a true New Yorker,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>A White Plains native turned Florida-based rapper LYPHE even made a rap about people calling Westchester upstate more than a decade ago as part of a magazine interview. Khristina Narizhnaya\/ NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that we don\u2019t have the same experience, the same credo, the same grit because we don\u2019t reside in a borough is comical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jon Chattman, founder of events and music series A-Sides, said the recipe for upstate is lots of trees, mountains and no cell service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, and when there\u2019s more than a half hour between exits,\u201d said Chattman, who is also content and outreach director at the Westchester Parks Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>He called the idea that only the city and Long Island is downstate \u201cridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean I know you can walk 70 blocks in Manhattan in a half hour but that doesn\u2019t mean a car ride or train ride in under an hour is the boondocks or Lake George,\u201d Chattman said. \u201cSpeaking of which, Lake George is definitely upstate.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s an \u201cUp\u201d setting debate for suburbanites.
