{"id":788815,"date":"2026-05-11T13:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/788815\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:32:13","slug":"philadelphia-theatre-company-leans-into-stories-of-family-and-legacy-in-new-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/788815\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Theatre Company leans into stories of family and legacy in new season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philadelphia Theatre Company recently announced its 2026\/27 season, highlighting stories that bring generations together. <\/p>\n<p>Along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/metrophiladelphia.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a> premieres of &#8216;Liberation&#8217; by Bess Wohl and &#8216;Purpose&#8217;, the Tony Award-winning play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the season also features a reimagined solo performance of Tennessee Williams\u2019 &#8216;The Glass Menagerie&#8217; starring Tony Award winner BD Wong and &#8216;The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System&#8217;, a musical for young audiences and families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross this season, we\u2019re drawn to stories about how people come together across generations,\u00a0 experiences and time,\u201d said PTC co-artistic director Tyler Dobrowsky. \u201cThese plays explore family,\u00a0 inheritance, and identity, and they\u2019re also invitations to come together and experience something as a community. We\u2019re creating a space where audiences can gather with friends and family, across ages and see themselves reflected in the stories onstage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Liberation&#8217; by Bess Wohl <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oct. 9 to 25, 2026<\/p>\n<p>Directed by PTC co-artistic director Taibi Magar and produced in association with Baltimore Center Stage (Baltimore, MD), &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiatheatrecompany.org\/liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Liberation<\/a>&#8216; is set in a small-town Ohio rec center in the early 1970s. The play follows a group of women who gather to share stories about work, marriage, motherhood, race, desire and ambition. &#8216;Liberation&#8217; explores what those conversations made possible and what remains unfinished as the play moves between past and present. It asks audiences to think about what freedom truly looks like and what we have inherited from the generations who came before us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System&#8217; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dec. 4 and 5, 2026<\/p>\n<p>PTC will also present TheaterWorksUSA\u2019s production of &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiatheatrecompany.org\/the-magic-school-bus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System<\/a>&#8216;. Designed for schools, families, and young audiences, the musical brings the beloved book series to life through an interplanetary journey led by Ms. Frizzle and her students, with original direction and choreography by Connor Gallagher. Gallagher is a New York-based director and choreographer with credits including Roundabout Theatre Company, Second Stage Theater, and The New Group, as well as choreography for artists Ariana Grande and Travis Scott.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Purpose&#8217; by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 5 to 25, 2027<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama and 2025 Tony Award winner for Best Play is directed by Philadelphia\u2019s own three-time Barrymore Award-winning director, Amina Robinson, and produced in association with Geva Theatre (Rochester, NY). Nazareth Jasper returns home during a winter storm and is pulled back into a family shaped by legacy, expectation, and long-held secrets. Tensions rise and truths surface as the play examines the weight of family history and how to forge one\u2019s own path within it. &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiatheatrecompany.org\/purpose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Purpose<\/a>&#8216; is a portrait of how identity is shaped by where we come from and the choices we make.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennessee Williams\u2019 &#8216;The Glass Menagerie,&#8217; adapted by Taibi Magar <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>April 9 to May 2, 2027<\/p>\n<p>The season closes with a reimagined production of an American classic, featuring Tony Award-winning actor BD Wong. Directed by Magar and performed as a solo performance, a fresh perspective unfolds through a singular lens as Wong takes on every member of the Wingfield family. Reframed through Tom\u2019s memory decades after he leaves home, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiatheatrecompany.org\/the-glass-menagerie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Glass Menagerie<\/a>&#8216; becomes a meditation on longing, memory, and the emotional cost of breaking away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Productions will be accompanied by community nights, pre- and post-show discussions, student matinees, and community engagement programming to deepen connections among artists,\u00a0 audiences, and the stories on stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you go&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Early-bird subscription packages are now on sale, with prices ranging from $51 to $174 per package.
