(AAP: Bianca de Marchi)<\/p>\n “It was a tough night for the Coalition,” she said.<\/p>\n “The message that we heard from voters was loud and clear: they wanted change.”<\/p>\n Senator Hume told 7.30 that the loss was, in her view, due to people doing it tough in Ms Ley’s former electorate.<\/a><\/p>\n Senator Hume had sought to remove Ms Ley from the party leadership.<\/p>\n “This is also a by-election that nobody wanted, and occurred only a year after the election, after a local member had retired after a quarter of a century,” Senator Hume said.<\/p>\n “That’s a very long time to have a seat, and the electorate are doing it really tough.<\/p>\n “People’s standard of living had gone backwards so far, and so fast, they were rightly angry.<\/p>\n Sussan Ley quit as the MP for Farrer soon after she was ousted from the party leadership. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)<\/p>\n “So when they call for change, if the Liberal Party is what they wanted change from, that’s what we copped.<\/p>\n “But can I tell you, there was no love lost for the Labor Party either. It’s just that the Labor Party didn’t have the balls to turn up.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Challenged by 7.30 host Sarah Ferguson as to whether that was the case, the senator said she had experienced it first-hand.<\/p>\n “People came up to me and asked where the Labor Party was,” she said.<\/p>\n “They wanted to take a how-to-vote card from One Nation or from us or from the teals, and they asked where the Labor Party was \u2014 and they simply weren’t there.”<\/p>\n The Coalition who lost its way<\/p>\n Pressed on whether this was a reflection on the leadership of herself and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, Senator Hume denied that was the case, and promised voters would see a change in Mr Taylor’s budget in reply speech on Thursday night.<\/p>\n Angus Taylor and Jane Hume are under pressure to turn the Coalition around.
