My sister-in-law pointed to a woman on the packaging and said, \u201cOh, that\u2019s Dua Lipa!\u201d I barely know who she is, so I didn\u2019t think it was unusual for the singer to be featured on the box. But at least one person thinks it\u2019s a big deal: Lipa herself.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung for using her image on some of its TV boxes, alleging that its use constitutes copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and a violation of her right of publicity. The complaint (<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Lipa_v_Samsung.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PDF<\/a>), filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, says that Lipa owns all \u201crights, title, and interest in the image titled \u2018Dua Lipa \u2013 Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamsung mass-manufactured, distributed (or caused to be distributed) marketed, and sold in interstate commerce across the United States a vast number of its televisions in various sizes in these cardboard boxes containing the [image],\u201d the lawsuit says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamsung\u2019s infringing conduct\u2014using Ms. Lipa\u2019s assets for zero consideration\u2014makes a mockery of her hard work in establishing a successful brand and has deprived her of the ability to control and monetize her assets,\u201d the complaint reads.<\/p>\n<p>The filing says Lipa learned about the boxes around June 2025 \u201cand immediately demanded that Samsung cease and desist.\u201d However, Samsung was \u201cdismissive and callous, and the Infringing Products remain on the market to this day, still being sold throughout\u201d the US, the filing says.
