PHOENIX (KVOA) – The Arizona Department of Transportation is urging drivers to take simple precautions with their vehicles to help prevent brush fires as temperatures climb and wildfire risk increases across the state.<\/p>\n
Wildfires have already sparked in parts of Arizona. Seasonal changes and weather conditions in the summer increase the risk of wildland fires, though they can occur year-round.<\/p>\n
ADOT outlined several steps motorists can take to reduce the chance of igniting a brush fire with their vehicle. Drivers should ensure trailer chains are securely attached, as loose chains can drag on the pavement and shoot sparks into dry brush and grass.<\/p>\n
Motorists should avoid parking on dry grass or driving through tall grass. Heat from the underside of a vehicle can start a fire, the department stated.<\/p>\n
ADOT also recommends checking tire pressure before traveling, as exposed wheel rims can cause sparks. Drivers should never throw a cigarette out of a vehicle.<\/p>\n
The department advises motorists to pack an emergency travel kit for road trips. The kit should include items such as extra water, healthy snacks, sun protection, prescription medication, and a fully-charged cell phone.<\/p>\n
If drivers encounter a highway closure or restriction due to a wildfire or crash, they should stay in their lane. First responders use the shoulder to reach incident scenes.<\/p>\n
