The top half of the draw will be in action first, which includes the third seed and reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff taking on the rising star Mirra Andreeva, seeded eighth. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for both matches, as well as the action in the men’s draw, but who will advance to the semifinals?

WTA Rome Quarterfinal Predictions
Jelena Ostapenko vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-head: Ostapenko 4-3 Cirstea

After getting through two tough battles against Elena Gabriela Ruse and Zheng Qinwen, Jelena Ostapenko had a much easier fourth-round match against Anna Kalinskaya. Ostapenko’s pace of shots proved to be too much to handle for Kalinskaya, who also seemed to be struggling with a thigh injury. She is into her second quarterfinal of the season at this level at WTA Rome, and her game looks to be peaking at the right time.

Sorana Cirstea, who is playing in her final season on tour, had never reached the quarterfinals at WTA Rome before, but she has now done so in style. She is playing the best tennis of her career, and beating Aryna Sabalenka must have given her confidence an even bigger boost. Ostapenko leads the head-to-head, but Cirstea has won three of the last four encounters between this pair and looks like the favourite to pick up another win at Ostapenko’s expense.

Prediction: Cirstea in 3

Coco Gauff vs Mirra Andreeva

Head-to-head: Gauff 4-0 Andreeva

Gauff’s resilience and mental fortitude were once again on full display against Iva Jovic. Gauff was a set down and then saved a match point in the second set before turning it around in a way only she could. For the second match in a row, Gauff’s performance was poor, but her champion mentality helped her get through the tough moments. However, she can not rely on it every time and must find a better level against Andreeva, who will be eager to defeat the American for the first time and comes into this match in solid form on the clay.

Andreeva is playing great tennis and hitting harder than she did in their quarterfinal encounter at this very tournament last year. The key will be how patient the Russian is, because Gauff’s defense will make her work really hard to win points. But she has shown greater maturity in her point construction of late and his might well be Andreeva’s best chance to get a win over Gauff yet. It will be close, but the Russian should have just about enough to do it.

Prediction: Andreeva in 3

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

[48
62,1464,67,132,68
0":"post-790504","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-sports","9":"tag-tennis","10":"tag-united-states","11":"tag-unitedstates","12":"tag-us
["GET
