It was followed 18 days later by the John G. (Chicago Tribune archive)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jones-tells-of-fight-for\/172048378\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam \u201cToothpick\u201d Jones<\/a>, so nicknamed because he chewed on a toothpick as he pitched, became the <a href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/gamesproj\/game\/may-12-1955-toothpick-sam-jones-becomes-first-african-american-pitcher-to-toss-mlb-no-hitter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first Black pitcher<\/a> to throw a big-league no-hitter, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in a drama-packed ninth inning at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, also called \u201cSad Sam,\u201d walked the first three Pirates he faced in the ninth. Then he struck out the side: Dick Groat, Roberto Clemente and Frank Thomas. At the time, he was just the ninth player to reach the 500 mark. Nearly 400 Northwestern students, faculty and community members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/05\/07\/nearly-400-protest-northwesterns-hiring-of-ad-mike-polisky-with-a-march-to-president-morton-schapiros-home-they-made-a-mistake-they-should-change-their-minds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marched<\/a> from campus to university President Morton Schapiro\u2019s home to protest the hiring of Polisky.<\/p>\n<p>Polisky, who was NU\u2019s deputy athletic director, was one of four named defendants in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/01\/31\/cheerleader-sues-northwestern-university-says-she-was-groped-and-harassed-by-drunken-fans-and-that-officials-tried-to-cover-up-her-complaints-lawsuit-alleges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexual harassment lawsuit<\/a> filed by a Northwestern cheerleader.
