AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Speeding remains the leading cause of traffic crashes in Texas, with nearly 160,000 speed-related incidents reported last year.<\/p>\n
These crashes resulted in 1,467 fatalities and 5,921 serious injuries statewide. In the San Antonio area alone, 2024 saw 10,703 speeding-related crashes, leading to 123 deaths and 424 serious injuries.<\/p>\n
In response, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is launching “Operation Slowdown,” a high-visibility speed limit enforcement initiative. <\/p>\n
Running from July 18 through August 3, the operation will see law enforcement agencies across the state focusing on motorists who exceed speed limits. <\/p>\n
Officers will issue tickets and increase their presence on the roads to emphasize the dangers of speeding.<\/p>\n
“Speeding increases the distance you’ll need to stop to avoid a crash and increases the risk that a crash will result in severe injuries or death,” said a TxDOT spokesperson. “When you speed, you can also face an expensive fine, court costs, and higher insurance premiums.”<\/p>\n
TxDOT advises drivers to adjust their speed according to road conditions, especially in heavy traffic, slick roads, or construction zones. <\/p>\n
Motorists are also reminded that traffic fines double in school zones or work zones when workers are present.<\/p>\n
