{"id":791490,"date":"2026-05-12T16:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T16:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/791490\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T16:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T16:54:14","slug":"nithya-raman-accuses-mayor-karen-bass-of-putting-la-up-for-sale-to-big-tech-annenberg-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/791490\/","title":{"rendered":"Nithya Raman accuses Mayor Karen Bass of putting LA \u2018up for sale to big tech\u2019 \u2013 Annenberg Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who is running for Los Angeles mayor, spent Monday afternoon bashing a plan proposed in Mayor Karen Bass\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cao.lacity.gov\/content\/budget\/26-27\/ProposedBudget\/?search=\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/cao.lacity.gov\/content\/budget\/26-27\/ProposedBudget\/?search=\">fiscal year 2026-2027 budget<\/a> to allow residents to use second homes as short-term rentals, a practice currently prohibited. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt was buried in her budget,\u201d Raman said. \u201cThere was no prior notice, no council input, no public process, no market studies, no feasibility assessment, just a proposal dropped into a 524-page budget to loosen our short term rental rules and let homeowners convert apartments and second homes into tourist rentals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Councilmembers will be debating the proposal at the Planning and Land Use Management Committee meeting Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIn other cities, they are taxing people who own second homes. In LA we are cutting deals from the corporations that profit from them,\u201d Raman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She said that the current rule that prohibits second residences from being used as short-term rentals stems from learning \u201cthe hard way what happens when\u201d those regulations were not in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHomeowners convert apartments into tourist hotels instead of housing for renters here,\u201d Raman said. \u201cRenters get pushed out, housing supply shrinks and rents go up for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Proponents are hoping that more short-term rentals will increase tax revenue and supply housing during the 2028 Olympic Games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Raman spoke with Annenberg Media after the press conference at Woodbine Park in Palms to give her pitch to college voters, saying she is the only candidate \u201cseriously fighting\u201d for an affordable LA. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMy pitch to every college student here in the city of Los Angeles is I am fighting for you,\u201d Raman said. \u201cI want you to stay here.
