So, we thought about what poster those same characters would make for the 30th, and built it on top of that first ad. We also wanted to make something that people who love Rent might keep and frame.”

See that new poster art below:

Originally premiering at Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop before transferring to Broadway’s Nederlander in 1996, Rent was that rare show that transcends mere Broadway success to become a cultural touchstone, changing the industry and truly permeating the mainstream zeitgeist—essentially the Hamilton of its time. The show is most noted for bringing ’90s-style rock music to Broadway, giving a modern spin to Puccini’s classic opera La Bohéme—but with electric guitars subbing for woodwinds and AIDS taking the place of tuberculosis.

Tickets will go on sale beginning June 1 at BroadwayCares.org.

And making the show’s creation even more extraordinary was the sudden and tragic death of composer Jonathan Larson, the night before the largely undiscovered talent’s musical was scheduled to give the first preview performance at NYTW. The loss—from an aortic dissection thought to be the result of undiagnosed Marfan syndrome at the age of 35—ended a career that was only just beginning, made all the more tragic when Rent went on to the history-making mega-success that it was. The show made stars of much of its incredible original cast, which included then largely unknowns Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jesse L. Along with a Broadway cast album certified two-times multi-platinum (meaning sales exceeding 2,000,000 units), the musical has spawned countless regional and international stagings, a big screen movie adaptation featuring most of the original stage cast, and a live TV production.

“Few works have captured the urgency, humanity, and resilience of a generation like Rent,” says Broadway Cares Executive Director Danny Whitman in a statement. “Jonathan Larson provided a voice to communities and reminded us all of the power of compassion, care, and showing up for one another. We are proud to carry that legacy forward every day, providing lifesaving meals, medication, health care, and hope to people living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses across the country. And through this extraordinary anniversary concert, that spirit of collaboration will translate into even more care and critical support for those who need it most today.”

“Rent’s legacy is inseparable from the fight against HIV,” adds Bithiah Lafontant, head of enterprise communications at ViiV Healthcare (the event’s presenting sponsor). “In the 30 years since the show premiered, advances in HIV treatment—including long‑acting injectables—have transformed what’s possible, but the epidemic is far from over. ViiV Healthcare is proud to serve as presenting sponsor of this 30th anniversary Rent gala performance as a way to honor a powerful cultural legacy, while also calling attention to how far we still need to go.”

Visit BroadwayCares.org.

As exclusively teased to Playbill by original music director Tim Weil last month, landmark Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical Rent…

[5122
5229,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
0":"post-791754","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-new-york","10":"tag-new-york-city","11":"tag-newyork","12":"tag-newyorkcity","13":"tag-ny","14":"tag-nyc","15":"tag-united-states","16":"tag-united-states-of-america","17":"tag-unitedstates","18":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","19":"tag-us","20":"tag-usa
["GET
