Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment &amp; Disease Monitoring<\/a>, a new study reviewed the diets and cognitive health of more than 2,100 Australian dementia-free adults between the ages of 40 and 70.<\/p>\n<p>Higher consumption of UPFs was linked to a significant and distinct drop in focus, even when participants followed a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/27\/lifestyle\/the-mediterranean-diet-can-lower-diabetes-risk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats the majority of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Around 41% of the study participants\u2019 daily calories came from UPFs, a number close to the Australian average of 42% and far less than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2024.02.16.24302894v1.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">60%<\/a>\u00a0Americans consume.<\/p>\n<p>Even a 10% increase in high-fat foods \u2014 roughly equivalent to one bag of chips a day \u2014 alongside healthy eating patterns was linked to a lower ability to focus.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49707602;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39354527\" width=\"883\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concentrated-woman-making-plan-sticky-127548073.jpg\" alt=\"A focused woman holding a pen to her chin while looking at sticky notes on a glass board.\" class=\"wp-image-39354527\"  \/>Ultra-processed foods that are high in fat, sodium and cholesterol can worsen attention span, even in healthy eaters. bnenin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn clinical terms, this translated to consistently lower scores on standardized cognitive tests measuring visual attention and processing speed,\u201d lead author Barbara Cardoso said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1125434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso\u2019s team also saw an increased risk of dementia, which is no surprise since UPFs have been linked to several dementia risk factors, like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.<\/p>\n<p>These foods can promote inflammation, insulin resistance, poor blood flow and oxidative stress, all of which are bad for the brain. <\/p>\n<p>The researchers believe that the manufacturing of these foods plays a large role in cognitive function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood ultra-processing often destroys the natural structure of food and introduces potentially harmful substances like artificial additives or processing chemicals,\u201d Cardoso explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese additives suggest the link between diet and cognitive function extends beyond just missing out on foods known as healthy, pointing to mechanisms linked to the degree of food processing itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fatty snack foods and ready-to-eat meals may also affect the brain by delivering <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/10\/health\/possible-culprit-for-spoonful-of-microplastics-in-our-brain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microplastics<\/a>, as they\u2019re in near-constant contact with plastic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/20\/health\/microplastics-in-junk-food-may-be-making-you-depressed-study\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disturbing amount of microplastics<\/a> in UPFs has been linked to worse mental health, with a higher risk of depression, anxiety and poor sleep.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s something to chew on.
