AND THESE ARE CALLS THAT DISPATCHERS DIVERT AWAY FROM POLICE. THEY ARE INSTEAD GIVEN TO MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. THE WHOLE POINT IS GETTING PEOPLE THE APPROPRIATE CARE. THE PROGRAM WAS LAUNCHED LAST MAY. IT\u2019S HOUSED WITHIN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. AND LOOK AT THIS. BETWEEN MAY AND FEBRUARY, THEY HAVE RESPONDED TO 5089 CALLS PREVENTING, THEY SAY MORE THAN 1500 PEOPLE FROM HAVING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL OR EMERGENCY ROOM. IN FACT, A DROP IN HOSPITAL VISITS FOR THESE TYPES OF CALLS BY 55%. AND THEY\u2019RE REDUCING REPEAT CALLS BY 58%. THE DEMAND FOR OUR TEAM IS HIGH. WE\u2019RE ABLE TO GO OUT AND RESPOND WITH THE OKLAHOMA CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT OR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, OR EVEN EMSA, WHENEVER THE PRIMARY NEED IS RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH OR SUBSTANCE USE. Oklahoma City’s mobile integrated health care crisis response team has diverted thousands of mental health calls from police, reducing hospital visits and repeat crises.<\/p>\n
