Rep. Tom Suozzi criticized fellow Democrats for pushing to speed up New York\u2019s redistricting <\/a>process in a bid to help their party gain seats in the 2028 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m opposed to all gerrymandering. I\u2019ve always been opposed to gerrymandering,\u201d Suozzi said when CNN anchor Abby Phillip asked him about the New York Democrat lawmakers\u2019 proposal \u2014 backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul \u2014 to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot next year to redraw congressional districts before the 2028 elections.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries\u2014the House Democratic minority leader in line to become the next speaker if Democrats reclaim control of Congress \u2014 has prodded New York state lawmakers to redraw congressional maps before 2030.<\/p>\n

New York and Washington, DC Democrats who heard Suozzi\u2019s comments were not pleased, a party insider told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuozzi is the only Democrat in New York not standing with Hakeem Jeffries and Kathy Hochul,\u201d fumed an Empire State Democratic official who requested anonymity.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocrats see this effort as the front line to ave the integrity of the democratic process. To save our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

This action counters President Trump\u2019s and the Republicans\u2019 initial moves to redraw House maps <\/a>in red states for partisan advantage, aiming to help the GOP keep the majority during the 2026 midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Democrats have responded in kind, attempting to redraw House maps under their control in what has become an all-out war.<\/p>\n

Jeffries himself has called the redistricting fight \u201cmaximum warfare\u201d and that the Democrats weren\u2019t going to unilaterally disarm and cede ground to Trump and the GOP.<\/p>\n

Redrawing congressional maps purely to benefit one political party is called gerrymandering. It involves drawing irregularly shaped districts to \u201cpack\u201d opposing voters into a few districts or spreading them across many, reducing their overall voting power.<\/p>\n

But Suozzi said both parties are wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cConservative, liberal, moderate, let\u2019s all agree this is wrong,\u201d Suozzi said. \u201cIt\u2019s awful on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should have independent redistricting. We should allow independents to vote. We should have open primaries,\u201d Suozzi said, which allow non-party members to vote in primary elections.<\/p>\n

Told that Trump and GOP-run Texas instigated the redistricting war, Suozzi said, \u201cThere\u2019s going to be this tit for tat. `They\u2019ll do this, and we\u2019ll do that.\u2019 It\u2019s bad for America.\u201d<\/p>\n

But a Democratic Party insider told the Post that Suozzi requested the last redistricting include more Democratic voters in his swing district.<\/p>\n

Suozzi clarified and partly walked back his comments he made on CNN when contacted by The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongressman Suozzi has long opposed partisan gerrymandering because it fuels division and weakens representative democracy,\u201d said Suozzi campaign senior advisor Kim Devlin.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, he recognizes that Republicans across the country have aggressively manipulated district maps for partisan gain, undermining fairness in the electoral process. Democrats are right to fight fire with fire in the short term, but our ultimate goal must be to undo all partisan gerrymandering,\u201d the Suozzi rep added.<\/p>\n

A recent Supreme Court ruling striking down a Black-majority district in Louisiana has intensified the House redistricting battles.<\/p>\n

The landmark ruling stated that Louisiana had unconstitutionally gerrymandered by race to form a new voting district, setting a new precedent.<\/p>\n

Democrats complained the decision weakens the Voting Rights Act of 1965 approved to prohibit discrimination in voting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rep.
