Lawson-Remer’s original ballot measure would allow current supervisors to potentially benefit from the added four-year term. Anderson’s counter-proposal, however, would prevent sitting supervisors — including himself and Lawson-Remer — from taking advantage of the change. Instead, only future supervisors would be eligible to serve three terms.

“It gives you all the reforms that they propose, but it removes all the trinkets and trash,” Anderson said while defending his alternative proposal.

Although Anderson says he generally opposes term limits altogether, he argued that any charter reform should avoid the appearance of politicians rewriting rules for their own benefit.

“Let’s look at the term limits in an honest and earnest way, so that we are not self-serving and we are not including ourselves,” he told CBS 8.

The debate over a possible third term has already sparked strong reactions from the public. Some residents support extending the limits, arguing voters should ultimately decide whether elected officials stay in office. Critics, however, accuse Lawson-Remer of packaging political self-interest as government reform. Opponents argue the proposal would hand more power to incumbent politicians by giving current supervisors an opportunity to remain in office longer.

Beyond term limits, the competing proposals differ sharply on government oversight and county leadership. Lawson-Remer’s plan would create a new independent auditor position that reports directly to the Board of Supervisors instead of the county’s Chief Administrative Officer. Anderson says he supports the idea of an auditor, but believes the position should be elected directly by voters.

Lawson-Remer’s proposal would also expand the Board of Supervisors’ authority over senior county leadership positions in departments ranging from public health to infrastructure, including the ability to confirm and remove top officials. Anderson criticized that idea, warning that it could politicize civil service jobs.

“These civil servants should be protected,” he said. “We don’t make this Tammany Hall through patronage.”

Lawson-Remer has sharply criticized Anderson’s counter-proposal, saying it would “gut charter reform.” In a statement, she said residents asked for “real reform, real oversight, and real accountability,” arguing Anderson’s amendments would weaken many of the changes designed to make county government more accountable to the public.

Last month, the Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 along party lines to initially approve Lawson-Remer’s charter rewrite proposal. A second required vote is scheduled for next Tuesday, when Anderson’s competing proposal is also expected to be considered.

If supervisors ultimately approve a final version of the charter changes, the measure would still need voter approval in November. The county has until August to finalize a proposal for the ballot. Anderson said he would have preferred using that additional time to develop a clearer and more thoroughly vetted plan instead of moving forward with a vote next week.

At the center of the debate is a proposal that would expand term limits for county supervisors from…

[5134
5229,1582,276,3549,7264,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
0":"post-792880","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-california","11":"tag-san-diego","12":"tag-sandiego","13":"tag-united-states","14":"tag-united-states-of-america","15":"tag-unitedstates","16":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","17":"tag-us","18":"tag-usa
["GET
