Spider monkeys are illegal to possess as pets in NY and DEC does not issue licenses for primates as pets. (NYS DEC/NYS DEC)

On April 14, investigators with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Environmental Crimes unit in Erie County responded to a report about a Grand Island resident illegally keeping a spider monkey in her home.

The monkey’s owner told investigators that she could no longer care for the animal. It was then taken it to a licensed primate sanctuary where a physical exam revealed the spider monkey had a broken right wrist and a case of rickets, likely due to a poor diet and lack of veterinary care.

The spider monkey is still being cared for at the primate sanctuary. The angler who illegally caught it was ticketed. (NYS DEC/NYS DEC)

ECOs patrolling a 35-mile stretch of the west bank of the Hudson River, between the Newburgh Beacon Bridge and Piermont Pier, interacted with 98 anglers over two days in April, issuing 30 tickets for offenses including failure to possess a fishing license, failure to use inline circle hooks, and possession of undersized fish. ECOs confiscated six striped bass from anglers that were shorter than the state’s slot limit of 23-28 inches for the Hudson River north of the George Washington Bridge.

A large group of anglers fishing in Hempstead Harbor on April 16 were found to be keeping over their legal limit of striped bass. While searching a thickly wooded area near the anglers’ location, K9 Finn detected an oversized striped bass hidden in the brush. The legal size limit for recreational striped bass in Nassau County (marine waters south of the George Washington Bridge) is 28 to 31 inches.

ECOs later observed a black pickup truck parked strangely in corner of a parking lot, almost hidden. The driver was the same person ticketed for the oversized fish and was in possession of four striped bass, which is over the daily limit of one fish per person. ECOs gave the angler a second ticket.

NYS DEC police report for April 2026 On April 14, DEC investigators removed a sick spider monkey from…

[5122
5229,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,78953,78954,2824,323783,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
0":"post-793288","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-new-york","10":"tag-new-york-city","11":"tag-newyork","12":"tag-newyorkcity","13":"tag-ny","14":"tag-nyc","15":"tag-nyup-outdoors","16":"tag-nyup-topstory","17":"tag-outdoors","18":"tag-tosptory","19":"tag-united-states","20":"tag-united-states-of-america","21":"tag-unitedstates","22":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","23":"tag-us","24":"tag-usa
["GET
