{"id":793369,"date":"2026-05-13T12:01:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/793369\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T12:01:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:01:16","slug":"alibabas-core-profit-plunges-even-as-ai-and-cloud-growth-accelerate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/793369\/","title":{"rendered":"Alibaba&#8217;s core profit plunges even as AI and cloud growth accelerate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jaap Arriens | Nurphoto | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BABA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alibaba<\/a> on Wednesday said its core profitability plunged in the March quarter amid heavy investments in tech and e-commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese tech giant said its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization (EBITA), a measure of the company&#8217;s underlying profitability, came in at 5.1 billion Chinese yuan ($750.9 million), an 84% year-on-year drop. <\/p>\n<p>This financial metric strips out one-time gains or losses to focus on a company&#8217;s core business.<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba&#8217;s U.S.-listed shares were initially higher in premarket trade before turning negative. They fell as much as 4% and were last seen down around 1.3%. <\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Alibaba&#8217;s Hong Kong listed shares year-to-date.<\/p>\n<p>The tech giant has been investing heavily in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/08\/china-alibaba-data-center-ai-chips-zhenwu.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">semiconductors for AI<\/a>, data centers, and the development of its own family of models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/29\/-alibaba-qwen3-ai-series-chinas-latest-open-source-ai-breakthrough.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under the brand of Qwen<\/a>. This has paid off in its cloud computing segment.  <\/p>\n<p>While cloud has been a bright spot for Alibaba, driven by AI demand in China, investors have been grappling with the company&#8217;s continued investments into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/11\/china-instant-commerce-price-war-billions-subsidies-jd-alibaba-meituan-ele-me.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">so-called quick or instant commerce<\/a>. This is a shopping service that allows users to get good with super-fast delivery speeds under an hour, and it has become somewhat of a battleground for China&#8217;s e-commerce giants. <\/p>\n<p>Adjusted EBITA in Alibaba&#8217;s China e-commerce group dropped 40% year-on-year in the March quarter on the back of these investments, even as customer management revenue \u2014 its single-largest contributor \u2014 grew 1%. <\/p>\n<p>However, Alibaba is seeing strong growth from those investments with quick commerce revenue up 57% year-on-year. Alibaba&#8217;s overall China e-commerce revenue was up 6% year-on-year in the March quarter. <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Cloud growth accelerates<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba&#8217;s investments in technology appear to be paying off in its cloud computing unit, which posted a 38% year-on-year rise in revenue in the March quarter to 41.6 billion yuan. That growth was faster than the previous quarter. Adjusted EBITA for the segment jumped 57%. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our strategic investments continued to translate into business growth. Cloud Intelligence Group&#8217;s revenue continued to accelerate, with AI-related product revenue achieving triple-digit growth for the eleventh consecutive quarter,&#8221; Alibaba CFO Toby Xu said in a press release. <\/p>\n<p>Alibaba said AI-related revenue came in at 9 billion yuan. <\/p>\n<p>Alibaba has positioned itself as one of China&#8217;s leading players, developing chips for AI and selling its services via its cloud computing unit. Its Qwen AI models are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/17\/china-alibaba-qwen-ai-agent-latest-model.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">among the top performing globally<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Hangzhou-headquartered company has rolled out AI across its business.
