PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 Arizona\u2019s attorney general has reached settlements with Greystar and two Valley apartment complexes over junk fees that left renters paying more than advertised.<\/p>\n
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced that three settlements were reached with Greystar, The Julia Apartments<\/a> in Mesa and Avana Gilbert.<\/a><\/p>\n Greystar will pay $23 million to the Federal Trade Commission, with $1.5 million of that amount going to Arizona renters. The company is required to be transparent about the total monthly leasing prices and mandatory fees to residents. When advertising rent prices, Greystar must clearly list all fees, what they\u2019re for and whether tenants are required to pay them.<\/p>\n Two of Greystar\u2019s Valley properties, The Julia Apartments and Avana Gilbert, must pay a combined $100,000 for charging junk fees to residents. <\/p>\n Mayes said the company misled consumers by advertising low rental prices that didn\u2019t include mandatory fees, in some cases adding hundreds of dollars onto each month for renters. <\/p>\n \u201cAt a time when Arizonans are struggling to find affordable housing, my office is committed to making sure consumers aren\u2019t duped into leases that are substantially more expensive than what they bargained for,\u201d the attorney general said in a statement. <\/p>\n Residents who believed they were inaccurately charged fees, including parking, valet trash or HOA dues, at either The Julia Apartments or Avana Gilbert between Jan. 2023 and Jan. 2026 can file a claim form with the attorney general\u2019s office.
