{"id":794965,"date":"2026-05-14T03:52:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T03:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/794965\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T03:52:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T03:52:27","slug":"mayor-mamdani-still-does-not-plan-to-attend-israel-day-on-fifth-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/794965\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Mamdani still does not plan to attend Israel Day on Fifth Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Israel Day on Fifth scheduled for later this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?s=Mayor+Zohran+Mamdani+\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> has not changed his position on attending the annual Manhattan parade celebrating Israel.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Mamdani, responding to public criticism from a Brooklyn Republican Assembly member, referred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">amNewYork<\/a> to comments the mayor made in October, when he said he would not attend the parade but would support city security and permitting for the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to joining \u2014 and hosting \u2014 many community events celebrating Jewish life in New York and the rich Jewish history and culture of our city,\u201d Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2025\/10\/31\/united-states\/the-jta-qa-with-zohran-mamdani-i-dont-begrudge-folks-who-are-skeptical-of-me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told JTA<\/a> at the time. \u201cWhile I will not be attending the Israel Day Parade, my lack of attendance should not be mistaken for a refusal to provide security or the necessary permits for its safety. I\u2019ve been very clear: I believe in equal rights for all people \u2014 everywhere. That principle guides me consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The parade, now called Israel Day on Fifth, is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Fifth Avenue from 62nd to 74th streets. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cProud Americans, Proud Zionists,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/israeldayon5th.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">event\u2019s website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Assembly Member Michael Novakhov, a Republican who represents parts of southern Brooklyn, criticized Mamdani on Wednesday for not attending, calling the decision \u201ca disgraceful insult to New York\u2019s Jewish community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades, elected officials from both parties understood the importance of standing with New York\u2019s Jewish community at the Israel Day Parade,\u201d Novakhov said in a statement. \u201cZohran Mamdani is choosing to boycott this event because he is more interested in appeasing radical antisemitic extremists than standing with Jewish New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, however, has not described his decision as a boycott. His October comments framed the decision as a refusal to attend the parade while still allowing the city to provide the security and permits needed for it to proceed safely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137848669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-13-171043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"681\" title=\"Mayor Mamdani still does not plan to attend Israel Day on Fifth Parade 2\"  \/>Former Mayor Eric Adams, a staunch ally of Israel, pictured marching in the 2025 paradePhoto by Dean Moses<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s stance on the parade comes after his views on Israel and Gaza became a recurring issue during last year\u2019s mayoral race.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, a longtime critic of Israel\u2019s government and supporter of Palestinian rights, previously condemned Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel as a \u201chorrific war crime\u201d in an October statement while also accusing the Israeli government of carrying out a \u201cgenocidal war\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>He also faced criticism during the campaign for initially declining to condemn the phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada,\u201d a slogan many Jewish New Yorkers view as threatening. Mamdani<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/mamdani-changes-stance-globalize-the-intifada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> later said he discouraged use of the phrase<\/a>, saying the divide between what some intend by it and how others hear it was \u201ca bridge too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oS7riKxYRRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">October mayoral debate<\/a>, Mamdani was also asked more broadly whether he would march in all city parades as mayor. He did not name the Israel Day Parade in that answer, saying, \u201cThere are many parades that I would not be attending because I\u2019d be focusing on the work of leading the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/state-of-israel-parade-hostages-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Last year\u2019s Israel Day on Fifth parade<\/a> drew several major elected officials, including then-Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. Sen.
