The footpath stretches from the corner of Pullman Street and Harriman Avenue over to Lathrop Street, featuring<strong> informational signage, trailhead fencing, and new native trees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While most of the 110-acre Elephant Hill space is owned by an estimated 200 individuals, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/los-angeles-activities\/years-in-the-making-a-new-trail-across-the-beloved-elephant-hill-in-northeast-la-is-here\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/los-angeles-activities\/years-in-the-making-a-new-trail-across-the-beloved-elephant-hill-in-northeast-la-is-here\" data-action=\"text_cta_1\" data-category=\"click_non_sales\">LAist<\/a>, the trail opening coincides with some<strong> expansion of the protected open space for the community,<\/strong> thanks to a combination of public funding and ongoing land acquisition efforts. <\/p>\n<p>A $700,000 county grant helped secure<strong> 16 additional land parcels<\/strong> and fund the new trail, while earlier funding\u2014including $2.3 million from Proposition 68\u2014supported the purchase of at least <strong>12 more parcels.  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe preservation of hillsides across Los Angeles County has not been equitable,\u201d said Norma E. Garc\u00eda-Gonz\u00e1lez, Director of the Regional Park and Open Space District, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/mrca.ca.gov\/press\/new-trail-opened-at-elephant-hill-open-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/mrca.ca.gov\/press\/new-trail-opened-at-elephant-hill-open-space\/\" data-action=\"text_cta_2\" data-category=\"click_non_sales\">press release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, hillsides have been protected for the benefit of a few, while<strong> communities of color have had limited access <\/strong>to open space and the natural resources.
