Jeff Probst<\/a> isn\u2019t afraid to \u201coutwit, outplay, outlast\u201d fans, but also recognized that the tribe has spoken out against \u201cSurvivor 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

The longtime,\u00a0Emmy Award-winning host took qualms with superfans spinning a narrative that the show\u2019s once ruthless narrative has softened over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe experiment with all kinds of new ideas, and we tried to usher in the most unpredictability we\u2019ve ever had,\u201d Probst told\u00a0Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether or not you like the season is subjective, but it\u2019s not that something didn\u2019t work. We\u2019ve made bad choices in the past. I just don\u2019t think we did in 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the myriad new additions to the evolving series, \u201cSurvivor\u201d enlisted the help of a celebrity panel \u2014 including Jimmy Fallon, Billie Eilish, MrBeast and\u00a0Zac Brown\u00a0\u2014 to collaborate on new twists for the show.<\/p>\n

Fan-favorite contestant Cirie Fields was taken aback by seeing the \u201cCountry Fried\u201d singer \u2014 who is also a close Probst friend \u2014 appear on the island in Fiji during Season 50.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a bubble. So to walk out on the beach and see Zac Brown standing in front of me, it\u2019s like, \u2018How did youget in?’\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never had someone from the outside come be a part of this. That let me know that Season 50 was about to be off the rails. Mind-blowing things that would never happen in the \u2018Survivor\u2019 of old are happening on Season 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s guest spot became a\u00a0hot topic\u00a0on social media after viewers watched the country singer spearfishing to feed immunity challenge winners and then playing them music while they ate.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Brown appeared in a number of individual confessionals and received more air time than a few contestants.<\/p>\n

Legendary \u201cSurvivor\u201d winner Parvati Shallow also criticized Brown\u2019s appearance, and noted, \u201cThey showed [Brown] catching the fish, and then they didn\u2019t show Ozzy catching one.\u201d<\/p>\n

In hindsight, Probst wouldn\u2019t change much about Brown\u2019s visit, but admitted that the country star could have impacted the game instead of serving as a reward.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fascinating to me that a couple of people, most of them either former players or people who will never play, criticize the show, and it gets momentum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell anyone who wants to listen: If that\u2019s your goal, to somehow impact our point of view, it will fail. We trust what we\u2019re doing. If you think we\u2019re going to re-edit because you thought there was too much Zac Brown, you\u2019ve not been reading interviews with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI couldn\u2019t be more serious. I love \u2018Survivor.\u2019 I love joy. I love fans. I\u2019ve also got a backbone. It\u2019s gonna take more than that to knock me over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Probst, 64, began hosting \u201cSurvivor\u201d at its inception in 2000. One decade into hosting the popular\u00a0competition show, Probst became disillusioned by the audience\u2019s desire to revel in conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like the stories we were telling, and I was losing my joy of the format, therefore my joy of the job, therefore my joy of life,\u201d Probst said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want vitriol and who can be the meanest, most spiteful person.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point, he tried to quit, but was met with resistance by executive producer Mark Burnett after confessing he was \u201cdone\u201d with the gig.<\/p>\n

It was Burnett who recognized that Probst likely needed some time off, in addition to more responsibility on the back end of the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cCBS was initially horrified. They didn\u2019t want stars to be given showrunner status,\u201d Probst said. \u201cBut I was so argumentative and sure that it was the right thing to do that I convinced them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the best move I\u2019ve made in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

While recognizing the cultural impact, Burnett admitted that playing \u201cSurvivor\u201d is similar to a \u201cmanagement training test.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone works for you, can you fire them and have them shake your hand after?\u201d Burnett wondered.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt \u2018Survivor,\u2019 you\u2019re voting people out \u2014 firing them every week \u2014 then you\u2019re asking the very people you fired to give you $1 million.
