Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has denied permanent residents who are not Australian citizens will be targeted under any potential future Coalition government.<\/p>\n

During his budget in reply speech<\/a> on Thursday night, Mr Taylor singled out that group.<\/p>\n

“We will remove Labor’s handouts for non-citizens,” Mr Taylor told parliament.<\/p>\n

“Many Australians would be surprised to learn that non-citizens are eligible for welfare.<\/p>\n

“We’ve already announced that the first homebuyer 5 per cent deposit scheme will be reserved for Australian citizens only. That’s because Labor has allowed some 50,000 non-citizens to access this scheme.”<\/p>\n

Mr Taylor told 7.30 his focus was on putting Australian citizens first, rather than targeting immigrants. \u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s about putting Australian citizens first,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s extraordinary at at a time like this that the government has cut support for older Australians’ private health insurance and yet there is welfare for Anglo-Australian citizens.”<\/p>\n

“Citizenship is a privilege and it’s something we want people to get something from.<\/p>\n

“If you contribute to this country, we want to contribute back and that’s what citizenship is all about but when someone can get all the benefits without that, it becomes meaningless.”<\/p>\n

Mr Taylor added that some non citizens have access to what he said were “17 different” welfare programs.<\/p>\n

People from Chinese and Indian diasporas \u2014 often have to give up their citizenship to become Australians.<\/p>\n

Asked for his message to those people, Mr Taylor denied they would be made to give up anything.<\/p>\n

“We’re not forcing anyone to give up anything,” Mr Taylor told 7.30.<\/p>\n

“We’re saying if you want access to the privileges which we believe should be privileges of citizenship, you need to become a citizen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“You need to make a choice.<\/p>\n

“The idea someone should arrive and the moment they arrive here get access to family tax benefit for instance, I think for Australians that’s just not on at a time like this when we’re really struggling.”<\/p>\n

Asked if that might affect the number of skilled migrants wanting to come to Australia, Mr Taylor said he did not believe that was the case.<\/p>\n

“There’s always a long queue of people wanting to come to this country,” he told 7.30.<\/p>\n

“I believe it’s the greatest country on Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If people come to this country in order to to receive welfare in the first couple of years of being here, perhaps that’s not an appropriate circumstance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“it’s appropriate that people come spend some time and become a citizen. That’s how most countries in the world work.”<\/p>\n

The One Nation playbook<\/p>\n

While Mr Taylor said that Australians are struggling, so is the Coalition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the first time in history the Coalition lost former leader Sussan Ley’s seat of Farrer in a by-election that saw One Nation’s David Farley claim the party’s first ever lower house seat in federal parliament<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked how big the threat was from One Nation, Mr Taylor said his budget in reply speech was not about stopping any momentum One Nation has.<\/p>\n

However, also appearing on 7.30 former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce said the Coalition had copied from the One Nation playbook.<\/p>\n

“I’d like to thank them for basically reading off the One Nation script,” Mr Joyce said before commenting on skilled migration.<\/p>\n

“As we know we’ve been bringing in about the population of Canberra a year. It sort of waned a little bit lately, but we just didn’t have the houses, we didn’t have the schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We certainly didn’t have the dams, we didn’t have the universities, we didn’t have the hospitals.”<\/p>\n

Asked if he thought Mr Taylor’s speech would stop the flow of Australian voters towards One Nation, Mr Joyce had a simple answer.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n
