{"id":795924,"date":"2026-05-14T13:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/795924\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T13:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:48:14","slug":"dallas-approves-new-street-signs-honoring-botham-jean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/795924\/","title":{"rendered":"Dallas Approves New Street Signs Honoring Botham Jean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1240\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/botham-jean-mural-credit-ryann-gordon-e1778765369382.webp\" class=\"article-thumbnail-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"Botham Jean memorial mural in Dallas\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tA portion of South Lamar Street was officially renamed Botham Jean Boulevard in 2021.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Flashit Photography<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Dallas City Council approved funding that will replace highway exit signs and road signs marking Lamar Street with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/news\/dallas-city-council-unanimously-approves-botham-jean-boulevard-11978298\/\">new signage honoring Botham Jean,<\/a> the 26-year-old Dallas accountant who was fatally shot in his own apartment by an off-duty Dallas police officer in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The $180,500 in funding for 13 signs to be installed by the Texas Department of Transportation is the final step in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/news\/is-dallas-botham-jean-blvd-here-to-stay-not-everyone-hopes-so-12027725\/\">street renaming that was unanimously<\/a> approved by the council in 2021. The new signs will be placed at exits along Interstate 45, State Highway 310 and U.S. Highway 175.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Already, Botham Jean Boulevard signs run along the road in the Cedars, where Jean lived before he was killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis street on which he chose to live and the street on which he died can serve as a lasting memory of the upstanding resident who loved Dallas so much,\u201d his mother, Allison Jean, told <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/01\/13\/dallas-city-council-approves-renaming-street-in-memory-of-botham-jean\/\">the council in 2021.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sign up for the This Week\u2019s Top Stories newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox<\/p>\n<p>THANK YOU!<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re all set.<\/p>\n<p>CLOSE\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Jean was shot by Amber Guyger, a Dallas police officer, after she entered his apartment believing it was her own. A Dallas jury found Guyger guilty of murder in 2019 and sentenced her to 10 years in prison. She has also been ordered to pay the Jean family nearly $100 million in a civil trial, which accused her of using excessive force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Jean family is seeking restitution from the city of Dallas because they argue that Dallas, as Guyger\u2019s former employer, had a duty to defend Guyger and pay out claims brought against her. The Jean family <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/botham-jeans-family-files-lawsuit-dallas-payout-2018-murder-by-former-officer\/287-aacc9102-8282-4270-814c-1cd252be1eeb\">filed suit against the city<\/a> in April of this year. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, city council member Adam Bazaldua stated that the continued remembrance of Jean\u2019s name is a reminder that \u201cno one is above the law.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has never simply been about changing street signs; it has always been about commemorating a life that was taken too soon,\u201d said Bazaldua. \u201cWhen driving down Botham Jean Boulevard, we are reminded of the thousands of lives lost across the country each year to senseless gun violence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bazaldua said that once city leaders were made aware that some signs from the initial 2021 street name change had not materialized, the horseshoe took steps to correct the oversight \u201csomewhat promptly.\u201d But he acknowledged that Wednesday\u2019s funding came <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/news\/dallas-botham-jean-boulevard-lamar-street-11922314\/\">on the heels of community advocacy<\/a> urging the project\u2019s completion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Community leader Yafeuh Balogun said his organization, Community Movement Builders, began asking the city for the updated signs in September 2025. Addressing the council ahead of Wednesday\u2019s vote, Balogun encouraged the horseshoe to vote in favor of the funds because it \u201cwould make no sense\u201d to not follow through with the street renaming approved years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI think this is very powerful simply because driving here today, I still saw the Lamar Street Signs,\u201d Balogun said. \u201cI remember how powerful it was back in 2021 when the city council voted to rename Lamar Street to Botham Jean.
