\n\tEXCLUSIVE<\/strong>: Here\u2019s a big one. Will Smith<\/a> has just committed to star in David Gordon Green-directed action-thriller Supermax<\/a>, about two FBI agents investigating a murder that\u2019s taken place in the world\u2019s most secure prison.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a deal pegged in the $70M range, Amazon MGM Studios<\/a> has this week closed a pact for worldwide rights to the Miramax project, which will mark Smith\u2019s first non-franchise studio movie in recent years. We understand this one will be a streaming play and not a theatrical release.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditional casting is underway \u2014 Smith\u2019s FBI agent partner is a female part \u2014 with production set to begin mid-August. Pic is written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, known for their work on the TV series Hunters and Invasion. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing. Will Smith and Adam Fishbach will produce for Smith\u2019s Westbrook. CAA Media Finance brokered the deal.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere was a chance this project made it to the Cannes market but the studio swooped in ahead of time to make sure that didn\u2019t happen. From Amazon, it\u2019s a vote of confidence in the project, but also in Smith. The studio will have noted the strong box office for Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which came two years after the actor\u2019s Oscar slap incident and is his only film in the past four years. Smith is a bet worth taking for a studio. There\u2019s an argument that along with Tom Cruise he\u2019s the most consistent leading man at the box office over the last 30 years, certainly in non-franchise movies. The domestic average alone of his movies across his career is north of $120M. <\/p>\n

\n\tGordon Green is coming off a string of successful genre movies, including multiple instalments in the Halloween franchise. This will be his biggest budget movie to date as a filmmaker. He most recently directed Amazon TV series\u00a0Scarpetta.<\/p>\n

\n\tWeil and Rosen will also executive-produce, alongside associate producer Natalie Laine Williams. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra, and SVP Spencer Ela are attached as executive producers. <\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s plenty of connective tissue here. The Picture Company is currently in production on Supermax co-writer David Weil\u2019s feature directorial debut, the Amazon MGM Studios\u2019\u00a0thriller\u00a0Tyrant, starring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner and Demi Moore.\u00a0The Complete Unknown outfit also recently landed the Mark Wahlberg-starring action thriller\u00a0The Operator\u00a0at Netflix.\u00a0Supermax\u00a0reunites Green with co-writer Rosen, who created the Apple TV series\u00a0Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which Green directed on and executive-produced. Weil is also writing the Evan Gershkovich film for Edward Berger and Chris Hemsworth-starring action film\u00a0Extraction 3\u00a0for Netflix.\u00a0<\/p>\n
