Current Best Musical Tony nominee\u00a0Schmigadoon!<\/a> will raise some money for Broadway Cares with a meta special event that will see picnic baskets auctioned in Times Square. Calling back to the picnic basket auctions of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s\u00a0Oklahoma!<\/a> and (by way of parody)\u00a0Schmigadoon!, the event will be held May 24 at 11:30 AM, with proceeds going to the theatrical non-profit.<\/p>\n

But baskets at the event will not be supplied by the ladies of Claremore, Oklahoma; nor Schmigadoon, [unclear]. This event will feature baskets sponsored by various Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including\u00a0& Juliet<\/a>, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee<\/a>, Aladdin<\/a>, Beaches, Becky Shaw<\/a>, Buena Vista Social Club<\/a>, Cats: The Jellicle Ball<\/a>, Chess<\/a>, Chicago<\/a>, Death Becomes Her<\/a>, Dog Day Afternoon<\/a>, Every Brilliant Thing<\/a>, Fallen Angels<\/a>, Giant<\/a>, Hadestown<\/a>, Hamilton<\/a>, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child<\/a>, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone<\/a>, Just in Time<\/a>, Little Shop of Horrors<\/a>, Maybe Happy Ending<\/a>, MJ the Musical, Moulin Rouge!, Operation Mincemeat<\/a>, The Balusters<\/a>, The Book of Mormon<\/a>, The Great Gatsby<\/a>, The Lion King<\/a>, The Lost Boys<\/a>, The Outsiders<\/a>, The Play That Goes Wrong<\/a>, Titan\u00edque<\/a>, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)<\/a>, Proof<\/a>, Ragtime<\/a>, The Rocky Horror Show<\/a>, SIX: The Musical<\/a>, and Wicked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The musical, which parodies golden age Broadway favorites, is currently tied with\u00a0The Lost Boys as the season’s most Tony-nominated show, with 12 nominations including Best Musical.\u00a0See the full list of this year’s nominees here<\/a>.\u00a0The musical opened April 20 at the Nederlander, where it continues its run. Schmigadoon! was first produced as a two-season Apple Original series. The Broadway version follows the plot of the show’s first season, which follows real-world couple Josh and Melissa as they find themselves in Brigadoon Schmigadoon, a mysterious and magical world populated with characters, plots, songs, and dance numbers plucked from Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma!, The Music Man<\/a>, Carousel<\/a>, and more. The adaptation\u2014which features a book, music, and lyrics by series creator Cinco Paul<\/a>\u2014includes all of the songs from the series’ Grammy-nominated score plus some new titles, including songs cut from the series.<\/p>\n

The cast includes Alex Brightman<\/a> (Beetlejuice<\/a>) as Josh Skinner, Sara Chase<\/a> (The Great Gatsby) as Melissa Gimble, Max Clayton<\/a> (Chicago) as Danny Bailey, Ana Gasteyer<\/a> (Once Upon a Mattress<\/a>, SNL) as Mildred Layton, Ann Harada<\/a> (Avenue Q<\/a>) as Florence Menlove, Brad Oscar<\/a> (The Producers<\/a>) as Mayor Menlove, Isabelle McCalla<\/a> (Water for Elephants) as Emma Tate, Maulik Pancholy<\/a> (It’s Only a Play<\/a>) as The Reverend, Ayaan Diop<\/a> as Carson, Ivan Hernandez<\/a> (Dear Evan Hansen<\/a>) as Doc, and McKenzie Kurtz<\/a> (Heathers) as Betsy. Brightman, Chase, Harada, Oscar, McCalla, and Kurtz are all reprising their work from the musical’s 2025 D.C. premiere. Harada also starred as Florence Menlove in the original series.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the company are ensemblists Afra Hines<\/a>, Becca Petersen<\/a>, Clyde Alves<\/a>, Jess LeProtto<\/a>, Joshua Burrage<\/a>, Kaleigh Cronin<\/a>, Kimberly Immanuel<\/a>, Lyrica Woodruff<\/a>, Nathan Lucrezio<\/a>, Richard Riaz Yoder<\/a>, Shina Ann Morris<\/a>, and Zachary Downer<\/a>; Carson alternate Miles McNicoll<\/a>; and swings Brandon Block<\/a>, Keven Quillon<\/a>, Lauralyn McClelland<\/a>, and Maria Briggs<\/a>. Casting is by Bernard Telsey<\/a> and Kristian Charbonier<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The work made its world premiere in 2025 at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, with series choreographer Christopher Gattelli<\/a> directing and choreographing. Gattelli is reprising his work on the Main Stem. See what critics had to say about the premiere run here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Schmigadoon!’s Broadway bow features set design by Scott Pask<\/a>, costume design by Linda Cho<\/a>, lighting design by Donald Holder<\/a>, sound design by Walter Trarbach<\/a>, and hair, wig, and makeup design by Tom Watson<\/a>. Pask, Cho, and Watson also designed the Kennedy Center staging.<\/p>\n

Schmigadoon! premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, with a second season in 2023 that sent its characters to Schmicago, complete with parodies of ’70s musicals like Pippin<\/a>, Godspell<\/a>, and Sweeney Todd<\/a>.
