{"id":796222,"date":"2026-05-14T16:42:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/796222\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:42:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:42:32","slug":"as-trump-meets-xi-in-china-a-closer-look-at-whos-in-the-u-s-delegation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/796222\/","title":{"rendered":"As Trump Meets Xi in China, A Closer Look at Who\u2019s in the U.S. Delegation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"g-wrapper_meta g-text-align-left svelte-fkyd84\" style=\"--g-caption-display:inline;--g-caption-margin-bottom:0;\">   Photograph by Alex Wong\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">The U.S. delegation that stood at attention at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday as President Trump and President Xi Jinping kicked off a high-stakes summit in Beijing offered one of the clearest glimpses of what is on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">At the front of the receiving line were some of Mr. Trump\u2019s most influential cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">In a succession of striking scenes, each of the officials, who have at times been unsparing in their criticism of Beijing across a range of economic and military issues, shook Mr. Xi\u2019s hand, in accordance with event protocol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">Mr. Rubio, a fierce China hawk, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/13\/world\/asia\/china-sanctions-rubio-cruz.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sanctioned by Beijing in 2020 over comments<\/a> he made about human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region. Mr. Bessent has described Beijing as an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/us-treasurys-bessent-says-china-has-been-unreliable-partner-by-hoarding-oil-2026-04-14\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unreliable trade partner<\/a>.\u201d And Mr. Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/Transcripts\/Transcript\/Article\/4202494\/remarks-by-secretary-of-defense-pete-hegseth-at-the-2025-shangri-la-dialogue-in\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has criticized<\/a> China\u2019s \u201cdestabilizing actions\u201d in the South China Sea as an urgent \u201cwake-up call\u201d to the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-wrapper_meta g-text-align-left svelte-fkyd84\" style=\"--g-caption-display:inline;--g-caption-margin-bottom:0;\">   Photos by Kenny Holston\/The New York Times and Evan Vucci\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">Mr. Xi also shook hands with Stephen Miller, Mr. Trump\u2019s deputy chief of staff, who has accused China of having \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5247084-stephen-miller-trump-saving-the-west-economic-domination\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">distorted the entire global trading system<\/a>\u201d through \u201ctheft.\u201d Flanking Mr. Miller was James Blair, a deputy chief of staff trusted with guiding the president\u2019s legislative agenda through Congress, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/10\/us\/politics\/james-blair-trump-midterms.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">currently in charge of steering<\/a> Mr. Trump\u2019s political operation ahead of the midterm elections in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">Standing behind Mr. Trump\u2019s most senior staff was a phalanx of leaders of industry, many of whom want more access to the Chinese market. Brian Sikes, the chief executive of the agricultural giant Cargill, is seeking to restore purchases of U.S. beef, sorghum and soybeans. Kelly Ortberg, the chief executive at Boeing, is likewise hoping to win a major order from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">The presence of semiconductor executives \u2014 Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Sanjay Mehrotra of Micron and Cristiano Amon of Qualcomm \u2014 underscored that Mr. Xi will likely raise the issue of the export controls the United States has put in place to block China\u2019s access to advanced technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">The team of Chinese officials who accompanied Mr. Xi to the talks included loyalists whom Mr. Xi has long turned to for support and counsel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-wrapper_meta g-text-align-left svelte-fkyd84\" style=\"--g-caption-display:inline;--g-caption-margin-bottom:0;\">   Photograph by Mark Schiefelbein\/Associated Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text g-body-text svelte-kxgec5 g-text_last\">Chief among them was Cai Qi, the director of the office that manages the Communist Party leadership\u2019s affairs, as well as He Lifeng, a vice premier overseeing economic policy. Both have ties to Mr. Xi going back to their earlier careers as local officials in eastern China.
