What would it mean for California?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The likelihood of a potentially powerful El Ni\u00f1o taking shape in the Pacific Ocean is rising, heightening concerns that Southern California could be in for an extreme rainy season.<\/p>\n<p>There is now an 82% chance that El Ni\u00f1o is likely to emerge over the next few months, up from the 61% chance estimated a month ago. And there\u2019s now a 96% chance that <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/el-nino-and-la-nina-frequently-asked-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the climate pattern<\/a> \u2014 characterized by warmer ocean waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific \u2014 will be in force this winter, the National Weather Service\u2019s Climate Prediction Center said Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen how strong this iteration of El Ni\u00f1o could be. There\u2019s up to a 37% chance that it will be \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">very strong<\/a>\u201d by the end of the year, up from a forecast of 25% issued last month.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a 30% chance El Ni\u00f1o will be \u201cstrong,\u201d a 22% chance it\u2019ll be \u201cmoderate,\u201d and a 9% chance it\u2019ll be \u201cweak,\u201d forecasters said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tropics are changing quickly, so we have increasing confidence that we will transition to El Ni\u00f1o within the next couple of months \u2014 and also a higher likelihood that this event may be a strong event by this coming fall,\u201d Nathaniel Johnson, meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, said in an interview Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Climate scientist Zachary Labe, of the nonprofit Climate Central, said that \u201cclearly, an El Ni\u00f1o is coming our way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really indicating that we are headed for potentially a very rare and unusual El Ni\u00f1o event this year,\u201d Labe, formerly of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, said during a briefing Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Map showing the typical effects of an El Ni\u00f1o pattern on winter in North America.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"807\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1764939320_735_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>          <\/p>\n<p>(Paul Duginski \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is one of the most powerful climate patterns on Earth, capable of reshaping global weather and affecting rainfall and drought, according to the World Meteorological Organization. It typically hits every two to seven years and lasts around nine to 12 months. <\/p>\n<p>A typical El Ni\u00f1o is linked with higher-than-average precipitation in Southern California, according to the National Weather Service. A strong El Ni\u00f1o can shift a subtropical jet stream that normally pours rain over the jungles of southern Mexico and Central America toward California and the southern United States.<\/p>\n<p>Global temperatures are already rising due to human-caused climate change, but \u201cwhat an El Ni\u00f1o can do is it can temporarily boost global temperatures,\u201d Labe said. California has already smashed through a series of heat records with increasing regularity, including earlier this year \u2014 notching the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-05-08\/california-weather-heat-wave-100-degrees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hottest March<\/a> ever recorded. It was also the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-05-08\/california-weather-heat-wave-100-degrees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hottest<\/a> March for nine other states, and the contiguous United States.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s no given that El Ni\u00f1o will bring a potent rain season to Southern California, some previously high-powered patterns have been monsters.<\/p>\n<p>There have been only three \u201cvery strong\u201d El Ni\u00f1os in the past half-century, in 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16. The first two brought huge and destructive amounts of precipitation to the Golden State. <\/p>\n<p>In early 1998, storms brought widespread flooding and mudslides, causing 17 deaths and more than half a billion dollars of damage in California. Downtown L.A. got nearly a year\u2019s worth of rain in just one month. At least 27 homes were so severely damaged that they could not be safely occupied along the coast, according to the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coastal.ca.gov\/climate\/extreme-weather\/el-nino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California Coastal Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the winter of 1982-83, damage was particularly severe along the coast as high tides surged amid powerful storms. About $100 million in damage was reported. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coastal.ca.gov\/climate\/extreme-weather\/el-nino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> 33 oceanfront homes were destroyed and another 3,000 houses, as well as 900 coastal businesses, were damaged by storm surges, waves, erosion and other forces.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/2015-state-climate-el-ni%C3%B1o-came-saw-and-conquered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2015-16 El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> \u2014 while strong in the equatorial Pacific \u2014 didn\u2019t bring the anticipated rainfall effects to Southern California, and failed to snap the state out of a punishing five-year drought. That water year actually saw below-average rain in the region, and either average or above-average precipitation in Northern California. <\/p>\n<p>However, that El Ni\u00f1o \u201cdid cause record coastal erosion along many California beaches,\u201d according to the Coastal Commission. <\/p>\n<p>Impacts of that season\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o were far more consequential elsewhere. There was a \u201crecord-smashing hurricane season in the central North Pacific,\u201d with 16 tropical cyclones through the unusually warm ocean \u2014 more than triple the average, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/2015-state-climate-el-ni%C3%B1o-came-saw-and-conquered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> NOAA. There were also severe droughts in the Caribbean, so much so that 65% of Antigua\u2019s farmers went out of business, with a 1-billion-gallon reservoir going dry. <\/p>\n<p>Therein lies a big asterisk about El Ni\u00f1o. Since 2000 or so, \u201cthe traditionally expected relationship between El Ni\u00f1o, La Ni\u00f1a, Southern California and winter wetness has gone the other way. The El Ni\u00f1os have not been extremely wet, and the La Ni\u00f1as have been extra wet,\u201d said Marty Ralph, director of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. <\/p>\n<p>During La Ni\u00f1a, the sea surface temperatures of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean cool \u2014 the opposite of the El Ni\u00f1o trend. The jet stream also shifts northward, typically pushing winter storms toward the Pacific Northwest and Canada while leaving swaths of California drier than average, especially in the south.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph coauthored a scientific paper that sought to understand specifically why 2010-11, 2016-17 and 2022-23 were very wet years in California despite the existence of La Ni\u00f1a. <\/p>\n<p>The El Ni\u00f1o\/La Ni\u00f1a pattern probably does influence certain storms that hit California, but only the typical seasonal variety that originate from Alaska or north of Hawaii, Ralph said. What El Ni\u00f1o and its colder sibling pattern don\u2019t affect, however, are \u201catmospheric rivers,\u201d which can carry tremendous amounts of precipitation to California from the tropics, Ralph said.<\/p>\n<p>Those types of storms have been increasingly prevalent in recent years, fueling powerful winter storms even without the presence of El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, last fall brought with it another La Ni\u00f1a, and an expectation for a dangerously dry winter for Southern California. Instead, the season was wetter than average. <\/p>\n<p>But the \u201cstrong\u201d El Ni\u00f1o in 2023-24 did coincide with a pretty wet year for Southern California, with downtown L.A. receiving 155% of its typical annual rainfall. That February, there was record precipitation and a memorable <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-02-05\/california-storm-weather-los-angeles-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five straight days of rain<\/a> that triggered hundreds of mudslides in L.A. alone. Dozens of homes and buildings were damaged by debris flow, including 15 homes that were red-tagged. <\/p>\n<p>While El Ni\u00f1o doesn\u2019t always perform as expected for Southern California, some experts still find value in using its arrival as a scene-setter for potential weather impacts. The 2015-16 El Ni\u00f1o \u201cwas a real outlier year\u201d in terms of its impacts for Southern California, Johnson said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is that El Ni\u00f1o is still going to tilt the odds in favor of those typical El Ni\u00f1o impacts. You just have to realize that there are other factors that could counteract this El Ni\u00f1o\u201d that tend to be harder to predict well in advance. <\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1os are typically associated with more precipitation for parts of southern South America, central Asia and the Horn of Africa, according to the World Meteorological Organization and National Weather Service. It\u2019s also linked with <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climatehubs.usda.gov\/hubs\/northwest\/topic\/el-nino-northwest-what-can-we-expect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drier weather<\/a> in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska, as well as the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-11\/ENSO%20Midwest%20November%202023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ohio River Valley<\/a> in the Midwest and upper South, as well as in Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia. <\/p>\n<p>Should a strong El Ni\u00f1o arrive, it could tag team with a current deep persistent <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-04-16\/ocean-california-sst-enso-blob-marine-warming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marine heat wave<\/a> off the West Coast. Both that marine heat wave and any incoming El Ni\u00f1o will \u201chave impacts on the animals, fish, birds and marine mammals,\u201d said Andrew Leising, a research oceanographer at NOAA\u2018s Southwest Fisheries Science Center. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, the warmer waters \u2014 regardless if it\u2019s a marine heat wave or due to El Ni\u00f1o \u2014 lead to lower ecosystem productivity at the base of the food web, and thus there is less food around and up the food chain for our bigger animals, fish, birds, etc.,\u201d Leising said. <\/p>\n<p>Leising said he expects the current marine heat wave, which would typically start fading sometime between October and December, to instead be prolonged by the arrival of warmer oceanic waters from El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t expect we will see \u201cridiculously warm temperatures\u201d with the confluence of the marine heat wave and El Ni\u00f1o, \u201cbut I would also not be surprised if we do break some records this fall, if only by small margins.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Scientists don\u2019t know too much about the cumulative effects of a prolonged warm oceanic heat wave. One effect is that they \u201ctend to make the prey that are around be deeper in the water,\u201d as they don\u2019t like really warm water near the surface, according to Leising. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay we keep this heat off SoCal, and this rolls right into the heat from El Ni\u00f1o during the fall and winter. That would be a long time for the animals to be exposed to these warm temperatures, so they will not only have less food, but the warm temperatures alone can be a problem for some of them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The current marine heat wave technically began in May 2025, shrank as expected last fall, but then did not recede back from the coast and remained off Southern California, Leising said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt then re-expanded during December and basically all the way until now, and stayed stuck there off Southern California.
