{"id":797079,"date":"2026-05-15T01:34:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T01:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797079\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T01:34:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T01:34:25","slug":"houston-area-man-admits-to-killing-bald-eagle-near-porter-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797079\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston-area man admits to killing bald eagle near Porter home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 A Porter man has admitted to shooting and killing a bald eagle at his home in northeast Harris County, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to federal officials, Santos Guerrero, 42, pleaded guilty to violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after authorities say he shot the bird on Oct. 11, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Investigators responded after receiving reports about the shooting and reviewed video footage that allegedly showed the eagle being shot before falling from a tree.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Authorities later went to Guerrero\u2019s residence, where they matched the tree seen in the video and located the injured eagle still alive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The bird was transported to an animal hospital but had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A necropsy found the eagle suffered major trauma, including severe wing damage caused by the bullet. Officials said the fall also resulted in liver fractures, internal bleeding and a broken leg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act makes it illegal to kill, possess, sell or transport bald or golden eagles \u2014 including their nests, eggs or body parts \u2014 without a permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray accepted Guerrero\u2019s guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for July 30.
