{"id":797192,"date":"2026-05-15T02:43:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797192\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T02:43:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:43:15","slug":"college-sports-report-cal-state-san-marcos-women-make-moves-in-ncaa-playoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797192\/","title":{"rendered":"College Sports Report: Cal State San Marcos women make moves in NCAA playoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teams from Cal State San Marcos advanced on two NCAA Division II playoff fronts Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s golf team advanced to Friday\u2019s quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Championships by finishing sixth in the three-day qualifying tournament at the PGA National course at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh-ranked Cougars will play St. Mary\u2019s of Texas in Friday\u2019s quarterfinals. St. Mary\u2019s finished third in the qualifying tournament, which was won by Wingate. St. Mary\u2019s finished at 45-over-par as a team. CSUSM finished at 54-over-par.<\/p>\n<p>Kiara Hernandez led CSUSM in the medal play tournament, tying for 22nd at 11-over-par. Abby Sickles tied for 39th at 16-over. Avery Foster tied for 42nd at 17-over. Carmella Carlisi (Del Mar) tied for 69th at 24-over.<\/p>\n<p>Annika Yturralde (Steele Canyon High School) of Point Loma Nazarene tied for 31st at 14-over par.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-ranked CSUSM softball team (51-8) opened its NCAA Regionals action on campus with a 9-1 win over Hawaii Hilo (26-18). Third baseman Zoe Karam was 2-for-2 for the Cougars with a home run, two RBIs, two walks and two runs. Designated hitter Rae D\u2019Amato was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Shortstop Jillian Albayati had a double in two at-bats with two walks and three runs scored. Pitcher Daleah Cardenas (19-2) allowed one run on four hits and no walks in six innings.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Ruch (Patrick Henry High School) hit a walk-off RBI single to cap a three-run 11th Thursday evening to give eighth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene (45-10) a 14-13 victory over Cal Poly Pomona (30-25) in their opening game of the Division II NCAA Regionals at PLNU.<\/p>\n<p>The host Sea Lions scored 12 runs over the final five innings, rallying to tie the game in the ninth, 10th and 11th before winning on Ruch\u2019s game-winning hit.<\/p>\n<p>Left fielder Tristan Moore was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, three walks and three runs scored for the Sea Lions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Cal State University San Marcos (33-19) lost two games Thursday at the NCAA Regionals in Seaside and was eliminated. The Cougars lost to Northwest Nazarene 8-4 to open the series, then were beaten by 12th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay 10-7.<\/p>\n<p>Designated hitter Zech Samayoa hit a solo home run in the second game to finish with 23 home runs and a school-record 79 RBIs.<\/p>\n<p>JC softball<\/p>\n<p>Second-ranked Palomar College (42-2) was leading Santa Rosa College (25-19) 33-3 in the fourth inning in their California Community College Athletic Association state championships opening-round game at Bakersfield College.<\/p>\n<p>The Comets had 29 hits. Alexis Huey (Poway High School) was 5-for-6 with a home run and seven RBIs. Ava Alvarez (Coastal Academy) was 2-for-2 with a home run and five RBIs. Taylor Armstrong (Oceanside High School) was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Pinch-hitter Grace McNally (Ramona High School) was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Aubrey Thorne (El Capitan High School) had a home run and four RBIs in her only at-bat.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Cosumnes River College (28-18) scored five times in the top of the seventh to upset Mesa\u00a0 College (30-14) in their opening game of the state championships. Shortstop Itzel Soto (Otay Ranch High School) hit a two-run home run and drew three walks for the Olympians, who play in the loser\u2019s bracket of the double-elimination tournament Friday. First baseman Alexis Serrano (Mater Dei Catholic High School) was 2-for-3 with a walk.<\/p>\n<p>JC baseball<\/p>\n<p>Second-ranked Palomar College (39-5) hosts Santa Barbara City College (28-16) at 2 p.m. Friday in the opener of their best two-of-three Southern California Super Regionals.
