{"id":797611,"date":"2026-05-15T06:50:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T06:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797611\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T06:50:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T06:50:19","slug":"jews-protest-at-new-york-times-office-against-column-alleging-abuse-of-palestinians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/797611\/","title":{"rendered":"Jews protest at New York Times office against column alleging abuse of Palestinians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK \u2014 Protesters gathered outside The New York Times offices in Manhattan on Thursday to demonstrate against a widely-criticized column that alleged systemic sexual abuse of Palestinian inmates in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Around 200 demonstrators, mostly Jewish, gathered on the sidewalk, chanting, \u201cNew York Times, shame on you,\u201d \u201cWe will not be silent,\u201d and \u201cNew York Times, get it straight, stop the libels, stop the hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas abuse covered up! Nick Kristof made stuff up!\u201d one man shouted, referring to the column\u2019s author, Nicholas Kristof.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators held signs that said, \u201cAntizionism gets Jews killed,\u201d and \u201cJ\u2019accuse\u201d next to The New York Times logo, a reference to the Dreyfus affair, in which a Jewish French military officer was falsely charged with espionage based on trumped-up evidence in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have decried the column\u2019s reliance on sources with a history of anti-Zionist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/nick-kristof-dog-torture-claim-israel-palestine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extremism and fabrication<\/a> \u2014 experts have said the article\u2019s most extreme claim, that Israelis use dogs to rape Palestinians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/from-rutgers-speaker-to-kristof-column-bogus-anti-israel-dog-rape-claim-goes-mainstream\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is not plausible<\/a> \u2014 and its timing, coming out immediately before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/sexual-violence-was-systematic-integral-to-october-7-terror-assault-study-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a major report<\/a> on Hamas rape was released. Besides End Jew Hatred, the other three groups are relatively new advocacy organizations that started since the October 2023 Hamas invasion of Israel, and reflect a growing movement in the US Jewish community that sees anti-Zionism as a form of hatred against Jews, and not as a political position.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260514_untitled_05869.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3823913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260514_untitled_05869.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1000\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tProtesters outside The New York Times offices in New York City, May 14, 2026. (Luke Tress\/Times of Israel)<\/p>\n<p>End Jew Hatred organizes periodic rallies in the US, but for the other groups, it was one of their first organized protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel that the Kristof libel is a turning point in that we\u2019ve seen the most lurid possible libel, the most bestializing depiction of Israelis yet,\u201d said Adam Louis-Klein of the Movement Against Antizionism. \u201cYou can see that the problem is systemic anti-Zionist libel, that society is in denial about the problem. The problem is systemic anti-Zionism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protester Eve Oster said she hoped that the protest would encourage sympathetic staffers within The New York Times to speak up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is libel against Jews, Israel, and it only causes more harm to Jews worldwide,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople think they are alone. They are not alone. We are not alone. (Luke Tress\/Times of Israel)<\/p>\n<p>Protesters repeatedly referred to past New York Times Gaza coverage that turned out to be false, such as the Al Ahli hospital explosion in October 2023, which The New York Times and other outlets reported as an Israeli strike but was actually a misfired Palestinian rocket, and a UN official\u2019s claim that 14,000 babies in Gaza were going to die of starvation, reported by The New York Times and other outlets, which was also false.<\/p>\n<p>Several pointed out that the \u201c14,000 babies\u201d claim came out shortly before the murders of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>Ramon Maislen, an organizer with the Brooklyn Bridgebuilders activist group, said Kristof\u2019s column stood out because, in previous instances, such as the Al Ahli hospital explosion, the situation on the ground in Gaza was more complicated and murky when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a general level of exhaustion and frustration, and we\u2019ve been dealing with this for quite some time, and I think this is maybe the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Several hundred demonstrators outside the New York Times to protest Kristof column <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/20K0KNzXTf\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/20K0KNzXTf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Luke Tress (@luketress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/luketress\/status\/2055047885671027127?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 14, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Attendees said they felt outrage at the coverage and feared the allegations could foment violence against Jews.\n<\/p>\n<p>Naya Lekht, founder of Stop Antizionism, compared the coverage to propaganda in Nazi Germany between Adolf Hitler\u2019s rise to power in 1933 and the mass killings that began in 1941.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was happening for those eight years? A cycle of libels. We are in the cycle of libels. Blood libels right now that dress themselves up as politics, like apartheid, genocide, Israel steals organs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were in 1929, standing in front of Der St\u00fcrmer, they also would think that they\u2019re the good guys. Do we really need another catastrophe for them to go and build another shrine to the era of anti-Zionism?\u201d she said. \u201cWe are here to warn them. We are here to warn them that what they are doing is they\u2019re commissioning violence. They don\u2019t understand this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times has defended the column in a series of statements. On Thursday, the newspaper dismissed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-to-sue-ny-times-over-opinion-alleging-widespread-rape-of-palestinian-prisoners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threat to sue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis threat, similar to one made last year, is part of a well-worn political playbook that ism to undermine independent reporting and stifle journalism that does not fit a specific narrative.
