{"id":79793,"date":"2025-07-21T04:59:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T04:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/79793\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T04:59:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T04:59:13","slug":"nyc-cyclist-among-2-killed-by-driver-remembered-as-safe-streets-advocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/79793\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC cyclist among 2 killed by driver remembered as safe streets advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The cyclist who was among <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/20\/us-news\/horrifying-video-shows-moment-stolen-car-fatally-plows-into-nyc-woman-sitting-on-a-bench-in-crash-that-left-2-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two people killed by the driver of an out-of-control car<\/a> was remembered as a longtime safe streets advocate training for his next race, his grieving family said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Scott Cruickshank, 55, was gearing up for the NYC Century Bike Tour, which is returning from a six-year hiatus this September, when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/19\/us-news\/two-killed-by-stolen-car-full-of-drugs-and-booze-in-grisly-nyc-car-crash-cops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mowed down<\/a> by the driver of a stolen Chevy Malibu that zoomed through a traffic median at Bowery and Canal streets in Manhattan Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The car slammed into two victims Saturday. Courtesy Cruickshank Family<\/p>\n<p>In a cruel twist of fate, the Chase Bank loan manager and loving husband backed an organization that rallies for safer streets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKevin had\u00a0been a huge supporter of Transportation Alternatives for years,\u201d his family said in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was registered for the TA Century ride in September \u2014 his favorite bike ride \u2014 and that\u2019s why he was going out for a long 4-hour bike ride to Coney Island yesterday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bike race is <a href=\"https:\/\/transalt.org\/events\/lualbnjrxhtxblhpgju23t7oxzamz1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pegged for Sept. 21<\/a> and first started in 1990 before its brief pause.<\/p>\n<p>Autumn Donna Ascencio Romero, 23, was allegedly behind the wheel of the car that fatally struck Cruickshank and 63-year-old May Kwok, who was sitting on a bench at the time of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Romero and her passenger, 22-year-old Kennedy LaCraft, tried to flee on foot but were captured shortly after. Police found drugs and alcohol in the Chevy. <\/p>\n<p>The mangled bike was seen in the aftermath.
