Breakthroughs in stem cell technologies that allow differentiation of human cells into many different cell types have granted unprecedented access to human biology, and newly developed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41576-022-00466-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3D organoid models<\/a>\u00a0are rapidly replicating certain aspects of organ function.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the latest news and policy debates on sustainable agriculture, biomedicine, and other \u2018disruptive\u2019 innovations. Subscribe to our newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0There may come a time when we have accumulated enough knowledge and insight from animal research to \u201ctrain\u201d AI and sample huge databases to develop drugs that bypass the need for testing in animals. \u00a0Indeed, there are many new companies that are already trying to harness large cell atlases and imaging data<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Critical funding for animal research must continue today, but with a forward look to incorporating emerging non-animal technologies that can, in tandem, help move biomedical science forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/topics\/translational-medicine\/why-we-still-need-animal-research-in-a-world-of-ai-and-organoids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">This is an excerpt.
